Most of your performances take place in one of the following
venues: Auditorium, banquet hall, country club, home,
niteclub, outdoors, restaurant, walk-around. We have
compiled a list of 225 common and uncommon objects that can
be found in these venues. When you arrive at the location,
you select the object you want to dramatically locate during
your show. A spectator "freely" selects a word (the object)
from the book and concentrates. Incredibly, you are able to
lead them to it in a dramatic fashion!
REVERSE BOOK TEST
In this mindblowing routine � created by Bob Baker � the
spectator becomes the mindreader. You open the book to a
page, put your finger on a word, and tell the spectator you
will attempt to mentally project that word to them. They
call out a word. You then show them the word that you are
pointing at. They match!
NAME GAME
In this effect, the spectator picks a word. You walk out
into the audience, searching around. Stopping at a woman,
you then ask the spectator to call out what he is thinking.
The word he is thinking of happens to be a person�s name,
lets say �Mary.� You ask the person you stopped at what her
name is. It�s Mary!
PSEUDO-HELLSTROMISM
The spectator focuses on a sentence that describes a series
of actions. They hold onto your wrist as you walk into the
audience and physically re-enact these thought-of steps!

MY COMMENTS:
When the original Mother came out nearly two decades ago, it
set the standard for direct, hands-off, simple-to-do,
powerful book tests. In the years that followed, technology
made it easy for others to create bastard children that
didn't really improve upon the original at all. There were
some clever additions to the book test library, but not
many.
And, now, Ted Karmilovich has done it again. After years of
experience, research, and requests, this new version has
come out and there is no doubt that the matriarch has firmly
planted her foot down as the absolute authority in the
family of book tests.
The basic working hasn't changed. A participant can pick up
the book, turn to any page, and think of a word anywhere on
the page. The performer then reveals it. As you know from
reading the blurb, there is a new set of words in this book.
All of them can be used for drawing duplication or, at
least, for describing so that the mentalist can zero in on
the thought.
If you're not familiar with book tests, or with the MOABT
itself, this is probably enough for you to decide to
purchase this. Actually, that should be enough. Let's
leave it at that.
A few questions remain for those who have the original. Why
buy the new version? Is there enough in the new version to
want to purchase this? The answer is yes. First, it's in
paperback, which was a popular and requested feature. It
was briefly released in paperback, from what I recall, but
it quickly sold out and was never repreinted.
Second, it has really cool new features that I've not seen
in other book tests. The best of those added features,
which are described in the blurb, is Bob Baker's Reverse
Book Test. This is where the performer selects a word on
the page and leads the participant on a visual journey. The
participant names a word and then the performer shows that
he/she was pointing to that very word.
I had the opportunity to try this particular feature out a
few times over the past week. It impressed my inner high
school students and it impressed audiences at the Magic
Castle. And, just in case you want to know, no, this
feature cannot be adapted to any book.
The 40 page booklet (8.5" x 5.5") contains detailed
explanations of the workings and many great new ideas which
have not seen before. My favorite is Roy Miller's idea
about getting the word. It's a great technique for close-up
or small group work.
The ONLY consideration for this is that the book is only
available in English. This is not a criticism, just a sad
fact and I'm truly sorry that those who don't perform for
English speakers will not be available to use this tool.
There has been some discussion over the fact that this
version is a paperback, unlike the original, which was
hardback. To those concerned about it, remember that times
have changed. There are more paperbacks than hardback, not
to mention that e-books are even more popular. To have
MOABT in paperback was a feature that was much requested
over the years. But for those who really want a hardback
version, I'm sure it wouldn't cost too much to take it to a
local book bindery and have it done.
As you might surmise, my take on this is that this redefined
classic is well worth the price and well worth adding if you
do book tests. I am also well aware that many performers
avoid doing book tests because everyone, including
magicians, seems to be doing them. Be that as it may, this
is called the Mother of All Book Tests for a reason and, if
you do book tests, this is one of the best investments you
can make.
