Wow!  I was trying to be a bit low key for awhile about my
comments on System 88 (I wasn't sure those would be my final
comments) So I didn't even announce on the home page that I
had posted them for a few days.  But some sharp-eyed readers
spotted that I had posted it and favorably mentioned it on
several forums.  Thanks ever so much to all those guys!  I
sincerely appreciate that you provided a link and not
re-posted my comments.

Frankly, I think System 88 is terrific.  Docc either made a
huge mistake in putting the "game" first in the booklet,
thereby putting emphasis on it and making people think that
System 88 is really a very old idea that's been around on
the Internet, or he did it deliberately so that most would
overlook the true system, which is the brilliantly conceived
tick sheet.  Anyhow, you'll find my comments on this rather
controversial new booklet below.

Things have been quite hectic around my office.  I've had
these brainstorms for a lot of new items.  And that's been
quite frustrating because I wanted some new stuff to be
ready for Mindvention 2007 in a couple of weeks.  I do have
a brand new item that I'm very proud of but it hasn't gone
through enough performance and testing to sell it yet.
There may still be some tweaks.  I hope have to some
prototypes at the con.  And you know that when it's ready
for mass consumption, so to speak, I'll let you know.

I'm still working on JHEFF'S DVD OF THE MIND.  That
definitely will NOT be done in time for Mindvention, as it's
still being edited.  I expect it will be ready no later than
December 1, and probably more like early November.  Finally,
the BUYERS GUIDE OF THE MIND 2008 will hopefully be out by
December.  I keep thinking of new sections to add.  This is
a guide to which stuff I'd recommend for beginning
mentalists and professional mentalists; which booktests I'd
recommend; which card mentalism I'd recommend, etc.  It will
be designed for the new enthusiast in mentalism, but
experienced mentalists may find it useful, too.

And new items that have been added, but not been commented
on yet, include Mind Waves, a new 3 DVD set on radio
mentalism, by Andrew Gerard and Mitox, a new book by Phill
Smiff.  I hope to have comments on them soon.

**** ORDER DELAYS
I just have to warn folks that next week I'll be performing
in the early slot of the Parlour of Prestidigitation (see
below).  The following weekend, after I'm finished, is when
Mindvention 2007 takes place (see below).  So there may be
some delay in some orders as I'll have limited time to get
to the post office.  Thanks, in advance, for your patience
and understanding.

**** NON-MENTAL ITEMS
I've gotten a couple of really fun new "magic" items that I
definitely recommend, if you like these sorts of things.
They're easy and a lot of fun to do.  You won't find these
in my catalog, but I thought I'd share my giddy enthusiasm
about them with you.

Matthieu Bich's Spreadwave is a hoot.  A blank deck of cards
is shown and then spread.  Markings on the card spell out
the freely named card.  And it IS a freely named card.  It
won the Invention Award at 2006's FISM and rightfully so.
As I said, it's easy and fun to do.

The other item I got actually has some mentalism
applications.  It's Gregory Wilson's Freakey.  Remember the
old copper silver effect?  How many carry around a half
dollar (which will soon no longer be minted) or an English
penny?  Right.  Gregory's discovered that keys are a
magnificent substitute.  And gold and silver keys are
certainly international, unlike coins.  You do get a
gold/silver key gimmick that's just awesome along with a
regular gold and a regular silver key.  As I said, it's easy
and fun to do.

**** AT THE MAGIC CASTLE
Several subscribers have already noticed that I'll be
appearing at the world-famous Magic Castle during the week
of Sept. 24-30.  That's the week before Mindvention and I
have the early Parlour slot.  If you'll be in Southern
California that time, stop by and say hello.  If you're not
a Castle member, let me know and I'll arrange for you to get
in.

**** MINDVENTION 2007
In just a few weeks, Robert Allen & Danny Archer's
Mindvention will be held at the Palace Station in Las Vegas,
Nevada.  The dates are October 7 - 9.  It's not too late to
register and make reservations and travel plans.
Featured guests include John Archer, Patrick Redford, Sean
Taylor, Jon Stetson, Joe Atmore, and Eugene Burger, plus
many, many more surprises.  And, yeah, I'll be there, too.

For more info, and the complete schedule, visit
www.Mindvention.com

**** THE MARKETPLACE OF THE MIND LECTURE
The cat's out of the bag, so let's make it official.  The
first lecture at Mindvention doesn't start until 4:00, but
I'm sneaking in a special "Marketplace of the Mind Presents"
lecture by Jack Kent Tillar.  Jack has a brand new book out
entitled The Blister Book.  He'll share of the work in that
as well as stuff from Trio, The Assumption Swindle, and
more.  Frankly, Jack will only be able to scratch the
surface of the volumes of creativity that he's created.  And
what he'll share with you is pure gold.  It'll begin on
Sunday, October 7, at 1:00 p.m.  You don't want to miss
this.  Really, you don't.

**** NEW JACK KENT TILLAR PRODUCTS
For those going to Mindvention, you'll get the first
opportunity to get some brand new stuff that Jack is
releasing.  He's got four effects/utility items -- Sports
Card Sting, The Virtual Gambler, The $2000 Card Challenge,
and Jack Kent Tillar's Secret Pockets.  Of course, the most
important new product is The Blister Book, which is a nearly
200 page volume filled with routines, ideas, and advice from
Jack and about three dozen top mentalists on Jack's most
famous routine.  Look for the book and the other products to
debut on the Marketplace after the first weekend in October.

**** PAST NEWSLETTERS NOW ON-LINE
Finally, I broke down and just decided to be plain lazy.
Instead of taking the time to re-format the newsletters and
make them all pretty looking for the blog, I decided I'd
rather spend the time on other more important things like,
oh, keeping the website up to date with the current
mentalism products and my comments.  Right now, I'm only
posting the 2007 newsletters.  Perhaps, in time, I'll put
more up.

So, there's a whole new section where you can see all the
past newsletters.  If you subscribed and aren't receiving
them, either check to make sure that the newsletters aren't
being considered spam by your Internet provider, or
re-subscribe (which is the easiest).

***** MARKETPLACE MEMBERSHIP CLUB
The next issue of Jheff's Journal of the Mind spotlights
Mark Strivings, one of mentalism's most prolific creators
and most famous as the creator of the SUC case, which
pros use.  To get this issue, you need to buy a membership
in the Marketplace of the Mind. For the $37 cost you get a
subscription to the 2007 issues of Jheff's Journal of the
Mind, an all-new e-zine for mentalists, and an additional
5% discount off merchandise from the Marketplace of the
Mind.  There will also be specials and other stuff
throughout the year.  Check out the preview edition
of the Bonus #0 issue featuring Jack Kent Tillar.  Go to
the website and click on the banner at the top.  Or use
the link below.

***** THE FRIENDS OF THE MARKETPLACE
Don't forget to check out the new Friends of the Marketplace
section. This is for those creators who are producing
wonderful products that I don't carry.  This is because, to
save overhead, I order as needed from my distributor, and
these creators aren't mass distributing it.  If you'd like
me to review your product and help you sell it, then you'll
find details about the Friends of the Marketplace program on
the website.  There's a button on the left hand side for you
to click on.

I've just added the third and the most important of Enrique
Enriquez' Invisible series, INVISIBLE READINGS.  This is
definitely an e-book that every mentalist should check out.
Also new to the section are Ron Martin's THE TAROT READER'S
NOTEBOOK, a must-have for Tarot readers; Craig Browning's
CRITTERS, an animal-themed collection of mentalism; Loren
Tindall's beautiful new THE DELPHI PORTAL, which is a
must-have prop for anyone who is a reader; and Gene
Nielsen's THE MAGICK YEARS, a jam-packed e-book filled with
over 70 professional and varied routines.

Remember, I don't make a dime on this stuff.  I do this
because I think the stuff is very good and worth it.

DOCC HILFORD & DR. LISA CHIN
SYSTEM 88
JMOM Price: $68
Suggested Retail Price: $75

THE BLURB:
Successful members of the PEA or PUA communities understand
the most powerful demonstration of worth is the ability to
approach a woman cold, yet instantly and accurately reveal
her deepest intimate secrets and desires. This is more than
mentalism, it’s a POWER. A power that attracts – it attracts
money, women, prestige and fame.

Clever cold reading techniques require years of study and
practice and don’t deliver the power a master of the Game
necessitates. Most mentalists substitute strong mind tricks
because they lack the true power of a master mind -- power
for which we so desperately hunger.

Under these demanding conditions, requesting someone to
write down personal information is ridiculous. Billets,
trick wallets, carbon paper, swami writers and cold reading
lines won’t help. In fact, here they just make you seem like
a phony trickster.

System 88 is NOT simple COLD READING, it does NOT require an
understanding of human nature! Within seconds of selecting a
target subject, System 88 analyzes the subject, filters
through 3,337,000 combinations of specific personality
traits and reveals to you over 50 different singularities.
These are easily listed on the System 88 chart, a
pocket-size card that each subject keeps and cherishes for
years.

System 88 is amazingly accurate. Developed by professional
mind reader, Docc Hilford and clinical psychologist, Dr.
Lisa Chin, it analyzes and defines over 50 personal
characteristics. The target subject will be in shock at the
unimpeachable information shown to her.

There's NOTHING TO MEMORIZE! Although System 88 can generate
over 3,000,000 different factual readings, everything is
designed into the chart. It works automatically! If a "tic
sheet" is like a tricycle, then System 88 is like a Ferrari!

Once you know a VERY SIMPLE formula, the System 88 chart can
be used with ANY type of divination technique or
psychological test. You’ll be able to use System 88 to
accurately read palms, handwriting or the color of a woman's
attire! The charts are the right size to carry anywhere and
can have your contact information printed on them. Using
them will generate fame and fortune because they're perfect
for walk-around gigs or trade shows!

BUT WAIT! System 88 also explains a psychological game that
Dr. Lisa Chin has used for years to psychologically assess
clients. They imagine five simple items and the analyst
knows virtually EVERYTHINHG about the client's subconscious
desires! Mentioned in a best selling book about how to meet
beautiful women, the System 88 game has never before been
explained for use by mentalists.

System 88 is 60 pages of information that you MUST HAVE! You
will also get a print-ready copy of the chart. And MOST
IMPORTANT OF ALL, you get special permission to copy the
charts for resale to the paying public. This arrangement
would cost tens of thousands of dollars if purchased
individually. There will only be 1000 numbered copies of
System 88 for sale.

Then, they’ll be VERY rare and VERY expensive.

Look at All You Get:

    * "Quick Learn" Formula
    * Pocket Chart with over 3 MILLION different readings
    * Special Permission to print and resell the charts
    * "What-to-Say" written script
    * 60 Page Book
    * 21 Pages of meanings
    * Example of a complete reading in detail

Pages 60 - Saddle Stitched

MY COMMENTS:
Oh, I know there's going to be a flood of complaints about
this one.  Those hobbyists and inexperienced mentalists who
are looking for something groundbreaking are going to claim
that this is a creative-less variation of classic stuff that
should have sold for twenty bucks.  They'll try to stick a
few more nails into the coffin of Docc's reputation.

Good! Let them try.

But for those experienced mentalists and working performers
who revere and perform the classics, they know that a
well-developed wrinkle on old principles is worth its weight
in gold, as the saying goes.  With System 88, Docc has
designed an ultra clever tic sheet -- the "Ferrari" of tic
sheets as described above.  It can be used by itself or in
conjunction with other reading methods.  It's simple to use
and the mnemonics are learned in just a few minutes
(really!!).  It's comparable to learning the Si Stebbins
card stacking system.  The tic sheet itself is half a sheet
of letter-sized paper, folded in half.  This tic sheet is
the pocket chart described above.

What's odd is that this is really the heart of System 88,
yet Docc presents this beauty in the second section of the
book.  The first section discusses what the ad leads us to
believe is a bonus system.  It may well be, but it takes up
a majority of the book.  This is not a quibble, just an
observation.  However, this certainly may lead some to think
that the System 88 game, which is a psychological test that
many may be familiar with due its presence on the Internet,
is the key to this booklet and be disappointed, because they
already know this.

As to the System 88 psychological game, the person is asked
to visualize five objects and when these are described
later, they are interpreted.  It is an amazing and
insightful exercise and this book has the most definitive
and complete list of meanings for this exercise that I've
ever seen.  It's also been scripted especially for the
mentalist, which means it will be real easy to use it to
attract women, as the blurb claims.  You get a killer
opening line which should lure just about any woman into
doing this with you.

Incidentally, before I go further, let me just say that for
those who expect this booklet to have typos and "poor
quality" like many of Docc's other booklets, you won't be
disappointed.  I think any intelligent person will be able
to understand the material despite the typos.  And I'll say
it once again:  Anyone who doesn't like reading ugly
manuscripts will be missing out on some of the greatest
mentalism material of all time.

Okay.  So this is really two reading tools.  The first is an
incredibly accurate "game" (more like an exercise) and the
second is a brilliantly conceived tic sheet.  But is it
worth the high price?  That's really the key question.  If
it were $20, fewer would complain (though it still boggles
me that so many forum posters complained about the brilliant
Cellular Mitosis, which is arguably the best cell phone
mentalism effect to date and way underpriced).  But it's
nearly quadruple that price.  First, consider that if you do
paid readings at, say, $10 apiece, then eight of them will
pay for this.  And, if one is only using the chart, that's
less than an hour's work.  (If you use the game, too, then
it's a little longer.)

For those who are already using really good reading systems,
then I'd say that isn't a must have, but it will certainly
add something to your readings.  If you have the money, and
want to check it out, I feel it's certainly worth it.  If
you do palmistry, tarot, etc., the tic sheet will provide
you with a free giveaway and enhance your readings, plus it
will give a printed reading to the person that she can go
back to.  Now, if you already have a great reading system
and a cool giveaway, then you may find this package
redundant.

Other than that, this is a very valid reading system.  It
certainly will do exactly as the ad claims.  And I really
like it.  My only complaint is that Docc has one copy of the
tic sheet included and you almost have to do some work to
customize it for your use.  I don't think a lot of people
will want to do that, which is great for those who will use
it.  Incidentally, the System 88 is certainly suitable for
non-English speakers.  Unfortunately, the tic sheet is in
English, but is very easily adaptable.  You'll just have to
spend the time to translate it.

Finally, I must not that this is a limited edition of 1000.
Each book is numbered.  (And it's in Docc's usual format of
a 5.5" by 8.5" booklet) Honestly, though I'd like to
recommend those interested to purchase it right away because
it will become a collector's edition, my hunch is that it
will be bought and sold on auction sites for quite some time
as many just won't see its value and pass it on to others.
But I could be wrong.  It could become collectable.  And if
you wait, you may end up paying a pretty penny for it.  So,
if you wait, you're assuming a risk.

Frankly, I think it's worth it, if it's something you'll
use.  I certainly find it much easier to learn than some
other traditional reading techniques and plan on giving this
a try.  So, I definitely recommend this to the workers who
know they will use it.  If you're not a worker, or have been
disappointed in the past with many of Docc's works, you're
better off passing on this and spending your money on
something else.

KENTON KNEPPER
MENTAL INFLUENCE
JMOM Price: $23
Suggested Retail Price: $25

THE BLURB:
Kentonism Deck
A bold and awe-inspiring effect. A spectator shuffles and
cuts a deck after being shown the faces of the cards. The
spectator cuts to one card - and this is the card predicted
in advance. The performer does not handle the cards once the
spectator has them. The trick that blew away the may famed
mentalists of the Psychic Entertainer's Association.

Dual Reality Deck
Kenton created the term "multiple reality" and "dual
reality" for his unique approach to mentalism and magic.
Since that time it has inspired countless performers and
authors. Here for the first time ever Kenton tips his
special dual reality work with cards.

Cards are sprung from hand to hand and a spectator thinks of
any card they see. The audience sees the faces too. The card
the spectator thinks of is the one predicted in advance. The
cards are shown faces and backs as normal.

The more the spectator talks to the audience, the more
amazing the trick becomes. Is it a real trance state? A
surefire way to do the think of a card force without sleight
of hand or fear of missing.

Running Time Approximately 21min

MY COMMENTS:
Though the running time is short and there are only two
routines in here, I must say that I really liked both of
them.  Kenton has taken a standard magicians' deck (meaning
it's not a regular deck) and created two strong and
wonderfully devious routines with them.  I can't say which
deck, but I'm sure you have it on your shelf somewhere, if
you're not already using it.  It's a deck that I
particularly like to use and greatly enjoyed some astounding
subtleties that Kenton uses in this routine and that I'd not
seen before.  The routines are easy to do, but do require
presentational skill as Kenton uses a lot of very important
language and timing to make these routines really effective.
The Kentonism Deck, by the way, has similarities to David
Regal's The Prophecy Pack (and if you know how that works,
then you may be able to figure out which standard magicians'
deck is being used), but the methodology and handling differ
significantly.

There are some considerations to these two routines.  The
Kentonism deck does not have a quick re-set.  The
Dual-Reality Deck works best when performed with a group of
people in front of you and the participant is standing next
to you.  It will work with one person, but it's much more
effective with a group.  It can be repeatable, but for
reasons you'll see when you study this, it's not recommended
that you do.

Obviously, if you're a mentalism who doesn't like using
playing cards, this isn't for you.  However, if you do use
cards, and you don't like using anything other than a
regular deck of cards, you may find that these two routines
will convince you to use it.  Though this is a comparatively
short DVD, it's got the same amount of material that would
be found in a comparably priced booklet that contains two
fully explained routines.  It's definitely recommended.

BLACK'S MAGIC
HALLUCINATIONS
JMOM Price: n/a, by request only
Suggested Retail Price: $19.95

THE BLURB:
hal-lu-ci-na-tions: Perception of visual, auditory, tactile,
olfactory, or gustatory experiences without an external
stimulus and with a compelling sense of their reality,
usually resulting from a mental disorder, drug abuse, or
induced by a magician.

Is it possible to instantly induce perceptual distortions in
spectators?

Hallucinations takes the work of mentalist Theo Annemann
(1934) and combines It with research of critically acclaimed
psychologists Clark Hull (1936). E. Hllgard (1965.1975). and
JR. Kihlstrom (1985). A concept straight from the Journal of
Experimental Psychology (1931.1985) we bring you an effect
that can be performed anywhere, anytime, with nothing more
than a pack of cards.

No special sleights, the deck remains in full view. Card is
a free choice. Five spectators see five different things.
The cards they think they saw turn out to not even be in the
deck, but have been in an envelope in plain view the whole
time. Deck is tossed out for examination.

Effect

A performer pulls out a deck of cards and a sealed envelope
from his pocket saying, "I'd like to share with you
something very interesting."

The envelope is placed on the table in plain view and the
deck is shuffled.
"I'll not be using any sleight of hand or trickery, so
please freely chose any card you like from the deck." He
says.

The first spectator takes a card and looks at it.

"Please commit that card to memory Sir, but don't share it
with anyone else. And now place it on top of the deck, where
it will remain throughout this little exercise." He tells
the person.

The deck is now held by the performer between his thumb and
forefingers without any suspicious movements and in plain
view of all concerned.

Looking at the spectators casually he says, "Have any of you
ever been hypnotized before, or do you think you could be?"
A number nod their heads and say yes.

"You may not know this, but studies have shown that
hypnotizability is unrelated to personality characteristics
such as gullibility, hysteria, psychopathology, trust,
aggressiveness, submissiveness or even imagination, which
means just about anyone can be hypnotized given the right
set of circumstances" The performer shares with the group.

Continuing, he says "And many scientists have used hypnosis
to temporarily create hallucinations, compulsions, certain
types of memory loss, false memories, and delusions in the
laboratory so that these phenomena can be studied in a
controlled environment. I'd like to see how it works out
here in real life."

Looking at the remaining four people he says, "Here's what I
want to do. I'd like each of you now, one at a time, to peek
the top card that he has chosen from the deck. Look at it.
Remember it. But don't say it aloud. Can you do that?" They
all say yes.

He then walks up to the second person and instructs them to
"cup" their hands around the card to protect it from being
seen by the others, and says, "Go ahead and quickly peek the
top card he chose; remember it but don't let anyone else see
what you see." This is done. He then continues to do that
until a total of four people have seen the top card
originally chosen.

Still keeping the deck in plain view, and without any
suspicious movements, he says, "Each of you have all looked
at the top card; have you all committed the card to memory?"
When they respond they have he continues with, "Now
please—one at a time—focus on the card in your mind and
starting with the first person, tell us what it was." He
points at the first person and hears, "Six of Spades."

Right way confusion comes across the face of the remaining
four people. Then he points to the next person who reveal
the two of hearts, and the next person who reveals the eight
of diamonds, then the ace of clubs, and finally the four of
spades; every card named is different!

The performer then very casually flips the top card over to
reveal an indifferent card—the joker—and drops it on the
table. Immediately he hands the deck out for inspection and
instructs the person holding it to find all of the cards
mentioned. The cards are all gone—they aren't in the deck.

He looks that envelope and tells one of the spectators to
pick it up and open it saying, "That envelope was sealed in
advance and has been lying there in front of all of you the
whole time. What's in it?"

Inside are all of the cards.

"It would appear..." he says, "you can induce hallucinations
in the real world."

"I normally don't do effects that require I use cards; this
is a RARE exception to that rule."
- Morgan Strebler

Comes complete with detailed 12 page instruction booklet,
envelope and gimmick card on Bicycle stock.

MY COMMENTS:
I have great respect for the original, which was published
in the very first issue of Annemann's Jinx.  The effect with
this is the same, but the gimmick has been updated.  And
this is the very problem that I had with this. However, this
is going to be very difficult to explain without giving the
methodology completely away on this public site.

Though the blurb already mentions that the gimmick is a
single card, it's the preparation of that card that I found
to be difficult to work with for two reasons.  First, you're
supposed to leave the cards in the card case and then take
them out during performance.  Try as I might, it was very
awkward to take the deck out and not have the card stuck in
the card case.  Then, the instructions call for shuffling
the deck with the gimmicked card on top.  As carefully as I
tried, the card kept getting into a position that the card
must be in after the card is seen by the participants.
(Yeah, this is vague).

Now, perhaps both of these issues are because I didn't
practice or don't have the knack.  If so, the instructions
aren't clear in just how to accomplish this easily.  So,
either the instructions are poorly written or the effect is
not easily workable.  I also found that there was a rather
frustrating statement that they don't read their e-mails in
case one needs help.  They claim they get far too many
e-mails to respond.  Yeah, right, okay.  Now, in all
fairness, they do have a live help line, which I haven't
tried.  In general, though, if the instructions by
themselves are incomplete or poorly written, having a back
up help line or forum is kind of a poor excuse for not doing
it right in the first place.

The bottom line is that, for now, I can't recommend this nor
catalog this, despite that I do like the plot and I do like
the idea.  Perhaps if someone can show me how they do it
successfully, I'll change my opinion.

WAYNE DOBSON
GLIMPSE
JMOM Price: by request only
Suggested Retail Price: $40

THE BLURB:
This top quality mini size leather wallet has been specially
designed for secretly revealing any information written on
the back of a business card and then sealed inside its
zippered pocket.

Tony Curtis Magic is pleased to have exclusively supplied
the leather wallet used in this effect in association with
Wayne Dobson.

Dimensions Approximately 5.75" x 3.5" (14.6cm x 8.9cm)

MY COMMENTS:
Wayne Dobson seem to be becoming the new Aldo Colombini.
He's putting out tons of stuff that are ingenious or slight
variations of other routines or products.  This one is quite
disappointing.  Oh, it's certainly a nice Z-type wallet.
But it's standard.  There's nothing unique about.  There's
nothing that's worthy of the cleverness that used to be
synonymous with Wayne Dobson's name.  Even the instructions
are skimpy.  It doesn't contain wonderfully unique
presentations.  Needless to say, there are quite a few other
wallets that I'd recommend besides this one, especially for
mentalists.  If you're interested in this and would like
other recommendations, I'll be happy to help.
