This newsletter is special. It contains no product reviews,
but it does have some urgent information in it. One is a
product warning that you should be aware of, one is my
holiday schedule, and the other is of a great opportunity
that you should miss, if you can make it.
Earlier this year, Alain Nu had a special workshop in
California on his metal bending techniques. It was
incredibly successful and very exclusive. There were quite
a few people who wanted to go and couldn't for various
reasons.
Now, Alain is bringing his workshop to Newcastle, England.
The details are below. Remember, this is the only time this
year that this workshop will be held and it is limited. I
fully expect that all the seats will be sold out by the New
Year, if not much sooner than that. Don't wait to reserve
your seat.
Oh, and Alain Nu has a brand new book, Any Card... This is
Alain's explorations of the Any Card at Any Number plot.
Technically, the work described in the book is not easy, but
it's from Alain, which means it's very well thought-out and
professional.
**** URGENT WARNING ABOUT PENGUIN MAGIC AND 3510
Imagine my horror when a customer alerted me to the fact
that this book is missing pages! It's true, though. For
those who have the book, check out page 84. You'll see the
subheadings "Phase Two" and "Thanks to Dunninger." It
appears as though "Thanks to Dunninger" is "Phase Two," but
that's incorrect as it's something entirely different.
There should be text under the "Phase Two" heading and
there's not. In other words, you don't get the whole
workings of Luke's 10-Card Poker Deal which is what that
section is about. I didn't notice this originally because
I was aware of Luke's effect, knew the workings, and
skimmed past the section.
After being alerted to this, I thought I'd be a good guy and
order the downloadable file on Luke's effect from Penguin.
This way, I can transcribe the information and pass it on to
purchasers who wanted to know the second phase of the
routine. It turns out that it's NOT downloadable. It's
viewable by those with an access code. This is definitely
not what's advertised.
There is no question that a company that misadvertises its
material, or one that publishes a $50 book without taking
the care to edit it, should be made aware of by the public
and should not be supported. The only way out of this for
Penguin to regain any respectability is to announce that
they will re-edit the book and replace all copies of it
at their expense. Depending on how they handle this
situation will depend on whether I continue to carry 3510 or
any other products manufactured by them.
For those who have 3510, I'd hold on and see what happens.
For those who don't have it, I recommend waiting until you
find out what will happen. I'm truly embarrassed and angry.
And I apologize to those who bought it based on my comments
and felt it was unworthy. For the record, I do think that
the material that is there is still worth it, but I
certainly now think less of it and I know it's not Luke's
fault. He's aware of his writing faults and expected
Penguin to edit his words. Penguin evidently doesn't
understand that when one publishes a work one must also
edit it.
Some have asked me about what the worst of 2007 is. Well,
I'd rather not waste time and effort on that stuff (though
if it isn't cataloged on my website that's a big clue).
However, let's just say that Penguin is certainly square on
that list as one of the worst and most unreputable dealers
of 2007. Maybe they'll change in 2008. Maybe not.
You've been warned.
**** MAIL ISSUES & HOLIDAY SCHEDULE
Though the shipping costs problems has been corrected,
apparently not every order is being charged. If you don't
see the charge on your invoice before you check out, try
entering your address again. Any order that does not have
the shipping charges applied will not be processed until
they are processed.
I will be out of the office right after Christmas and
through New Year's week. So any orders placed after the
20th of December may not be sent out until January 7.
Orders placed after Christmas definitely will not be sent
out until January 7. This excludes e-books and Marketplace
Memberships, of course.
**** REAL GHOST STILL AVAILABLE
My distributor did get a limited supply of Christopher
Taylor's Real Ghost, but apparently some that were earmarked
to be distributed were not claimed. So there is a nice
supply of this wonderful new utility item that should last
through Christmas. Oh, and I'll be adding my comments about
Real Ghost within a day or so.
**** PAST NEWSLETTERS NOW ON-LINE
Finally, I broke down and just decided to be plain lazy.
Instead of taking the time to re-format the newsletters and
make them all pretty looking for the blog, I decided I'd
rather spend the time on other more important things like,
oh, keeping the website up to date with the current
mentalism products and my comments. Right now, I'm only
posting the 2007 newsletters. Perhaps, in time, I'll put
more up.
So, there's a whole new section where you can see all the
past newsletters. If you subscribed and aren't receiving
them, either check to make sure that the newsletters aren't
being considered spam by your Internet provider, or
re-subscribe (which is the easiest).
***** MARKETPLACE MEMBERSHIP CLUB
The new issue of Jheff's Journal of the Mind spotlights
Mark Strivings, one of mentalism's most prolific creators
and most famous as the creator of the SUC case, which
pros use. To get this issue, you need to buy a membership
in the Marketplace of the Mind. For the $37 cost you get a
subscription to the 2007 issues of Jheff's Journal of the
Mind, an all-new e-zine for mentalists, and an additional
5% discount off merchandise from the Marketplace of the
Mind. There will also be specials and other stuff
throughout the year. Check out the preview edition
of the Bonus #0 issue featuring Jack Kent Tillar. Go to
the website and click on the banner at the top. Or use
the link below.
Check it out here:

***** THE FRIENDS OF THE MARKETPLACE
Don't forget to check out the new Friends of the Marketplace
section. This is for those creators who are producing
wonderful products that I don't carry. This is because, to
save overhead, I order as needed from my distributor, and
these creators aren't mass distributing it. If you'd like
me to review your product and help you sell it, then you'll
find details about the Friends of the Marketplace program on
the website. There's a button on the left hand side for you
to click on.
Enrique Enriquez has a wonderful new e-book on the Tarot,
LOOKING AT THE MARSEILLES TAROT, which is suitable for both
beginners and experienced readers. Joshua Quinn's DUPLICITY
takes your favorite drawing dupe routine to the next level.
Also new to the section are Ron Martin's THE TAROT READER'S
NOTEBOOK, a must-have for Tarot readers; Patrick Redford's
TRIANGLE, a comic book featuring 3 clever new items; Loren
Tindall's beautiful new THE DELPHI PORTAL, which is a
must-have prop for anyone who is a reader; and Gene
Nielsen's THE MAGICK YEARS, a jam-packed e-book filled with
over 70 professional and varied routines.
Remember, I don't make a dime on this stuff. I do this
because I think the stuff is very good and worth it.

Systems of Transforming Metal 2008
Newcastle, England
To all metal benders:
The Systems of Bending Metal Workshop, presented by Alain
Nu, will take place in Newcastle England on Thursday March
13th, 2008 beginning at 10am and ending at 6pm.
If you have taken my workshop in the past, and are
interested in attending my workshop in England, the first
two people who respond will be admitted for FREE. This is to
encourage you to practice the techniques taught and continue
your training.
There are twelve seats available in March, and about 8
people have already expressed a genuine interest in
participating. Three have already paid their deposits.
The total fee for attending this seminar, with the knowledge
that a non-disclosure agreement will be signed by you, is
$1500, for an eight hour course. This is the best way to
teach this material, as less time has already proven to not
be enough to learn everything taught. A 50% deposit of $750
is required to secure your seat in Newcastle on March 13th.
If you are one of those who expressed a genuine interest in
attending, you will soon be sent a Paypal money request from
the e-address: justsaynushop@yahoo.com. Please send your
deposit before Jan 31st to secure your attendance. If you
have a Paypal account already, you can just send me your
deposits via the above email address.
The rest of you who are on my wait list or past-workshop
list, let Alain know ASAP if you are interested in joining
him in England this March. If you know of anyone who may
also be interested in participating, please let them know
and tell them to get in touch!
"I am a professional mentalist with years of experience with
metal bending. I have to admit that I have since stopped as
almost every close up magician started doing it, reducing it
to a puzzle. I am interested in reintroducing it but need to
find a way of lifting it back into the mysterious status it
once held. Do you think that the STM seminar would provide
me with ideas to do this?"
The great mentalists throughout history have always become
masterful at being able to differentiate their presentations
from that of the "tricks" that the others are doing. This
attitude can be supported by applying new and original metal
bending techniques as live and visual "proof", but little
will beat a strong conviction in yourself and your
abilities. The seminar Alain Nu gives will help to
strengthen that conviction by teaching a vast assortment of
techniques by which to stylize your own presentations and as
well be confident in knowing that your understanding of
bending metal goes farther down the rabbit hole than a
simple "bend and twist."
This course is partly a lecture in which Nu will show you
the dynamics of 36 techniques. These techniques are used in
specific combinations so that roughly nine to twelve
different compositions, or "systems", are given to you for
the purpose of understanding Alain’s unusual style and
philosophy. Each of these systems results in a spoon, fork,
or knife being bent in completely different ways. Nu also
expounds on his thoughts regarding bending coins, keys, and
other metal objects. But this seminar is also a hands-on
workshop, in which you will be able to choose from a
selection of metal cutlery and try each technique yourself.
So although there is not much in the way of "quick and
easy", if you feel that this is something that you'd like to
dedicate yourself to learning, and you are a serious student
of the art of mentalism, you would make an excellent
candidate for this workshop. Alain has held these techniques
back for years, but now he is opening it up to a few serious
others.
