and use the shopping cart. If you're unable to do
this, you may respond to this e-mail.
To make sure you've not been missing any newsletters, check
out my blog, which is accessible from the main page. All of
the recent past newsletters are archived there.

After I proclaimed in the last newsletter that I didn't want
to make any New Year's resolutions, I realized that there
was one that I did want to make. This year, I plan to
comment on products and put them up on the web in a more
timely manner than before. Last year, there were a few
items I never did get around to commenting on. Fortunately,
most of those were items that I would not catalog. If you
don't see an item in my catalog, there's a good chance it's
because I just can't recommend it.
Anyhow, that explains why there's a huge amount of material
in this newsletter. I wanted to get all the new items that
I just got in up as fast as I could. Larry Becker, Lee
Earle, Andrew Mayne, Eugene Burger, Jay Sankey, and, that's
not a mistake, Harry Houdini are represented in this issue
with new products. So let's get on with some other business
and then right to the ad blurbs and comments.
**** CONVERSATIONS OF THE MIND
Okay, hopefully most of you know about the Marketplace
Membership which features the Journal of the Mind, plus
specials and discounts on merchandise. I've decided to add
a brand new feature called Conversations of the Mind. This
will consist of conference calls to discuss various subjects
and also to converse with top performers in the field. Many
top performers are not releasing books or new material and
do not fit the format of the Journal of the Mind, but they
would be ideal for the new Conversations of the Mind.
Subjects that I've been requested to cover include
structuring acts, effects that can be done totally impromptu
and with ungimmicked items, Q&A routines, marketing, and
selecting material for your act.
These conversations, which will be recorded and available
for download, will be accessible only to those who have
Marketplace Memberships (see below). However, the very
first one will be available to all newsletter subscribers as
that one will be available later as a free preview. I have
tentatively scheduled the first conversation to take place
on Monday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (and it's
very tentative right now). Unfortunately, there is only a
limited number of folks who will be able to participate. I
can't tell you how many yet as I'm still undecided about
which service I'll use to make this happen.
The first topic will be an important one to all mentalists:
the difference between performing mentalism and magic. It's
an issue that I've been working on for awhile (and I'm
planning on finishing my book on this subject to be out by
the year's end). For those magicians who wish to get into
mentalism, I'll discuss the differences and how to make the
mentalism more effective. For mentalists, the information
may help you greatly improve your act. Of course, this
topic is one that I can use to cover quite a few questions
that people have.
Speaking of that, if anyone would like to submit questions
ahead of time to me on this topic, please do so. I will
definitely answer all the questions I have in the allotted
time. And, of course, I will certainly send out details and
instructions as we get closer to the date of the conference
call.
**** PAOLO CAVALLI
Paolo has long been considered one of the most creative
thinkers in mentalism. I've just added six of his works to
my website as part of the Friends of the Marketplace
program. They are Omicron, Sigma, Upsilon, Con-Federacy,
The Watermark Codex, and The Flytrap Experience. I hope to
have comments on them soon.
**** PRODUCT UPDATES
Several people have e-mailed me regarding the documentary on
Max Maven that Dustin Stinett reviewed in a recent Genii
magazine. It's called "The Fabulous Monster" (no, I'm not
making that up!). I just got a copy from Max and I haven't
seen it yet, but I've heard raves about it. Anyhow, the
producers of the film are very interested in mass producing
these for the general market and so I don't think it will be
too long before I will be able to offer it. Right now, if
you can't wait, you can get the disc for $21 postpaid from
Max (he takes checks, cash, or money orders only).
Otherwise, I do plan on carrying it. As soon as I know more
info, I'll let you know.
**** PAST NEWSLETTERS NOW ON-LINE
Finally, I broke down and just decided to be plain lazy.
Instead of taking the time to re-format the newsletters and
make them all pretty looking for the blog, I decided I'd
rather spend the time on other more important things like,
oh, keeping the website up to date with the current
mentalism products and my comments.
So, there's a whole new section where you can see all the
past newsletters. If you subscribed and aren't receiving
them, either check to make sure that the newsletters aren't
being considered spam by your Internet provider, or
re-subscribe (which is the easiest).
***** MARKETPLACE MEMBERSHIP CLUB FOR 2008 AVAILABLE NOW!

Mind, which spotlights mentalism's hottest and most creative
talents each issue, join the 2008 Marketplace of the Mind.

***** THE FRIENDS OF THE MARKETPLACE
Don't forget to check out the new Friends of the Marketplace
section. This is for those creators who are producing
wonderful products that I don't carry. This is because, to
save overhead, I order as needed from my distributor, and
these creators aren't mass distributing it. If you'd like
me to review your product and help you sell it, then you'll
find details about the Friends of the Marketplace program on
the website. There's a button on the left hand side for you
to click on.
Enrique Enriquez has a wonderful new e-book on the Tarot,
LOOKING AT THE MARSEILLES TAROT, which is suitable for both
beginners and experienced readers. Joshua Quinn's DUPLICITY
takes your favorite drawing dupe routine to the next level.
Also new to the section are Ron Martin's THE TAROT READER'S
NOTEBOOK, a must-have for Tarot readers; Patrick Redford's
TRIANGLE, a comic book featuring 3 clever new items; Loren
Tindall's beautiful new THE DELPHI PORTAL, which is a
must-have prop for anyone who is a reader; and Gene
Nielsen's THE MAGICK YEARS, a jam-packed e-book filled with
over 70 professional and varied routines.
Remember, I don't make a dime on this stuff. I do this
because I think the stuff is very good and worth it.

LARRY BECKER & LEE EARLE
SHHHH!
JMOM Price: $91
Suggested Retail Price: $99.50
THE BLURB:
Bold, Easy and Entertaining Mentalism!
Four 3.5 x 5 inch plastic cards from a popular parlor game
are handed to individuals in your audience. They verify that
each one bears the identical four questions to be answered,
regarding a person's horoscope sign, a phone number, a
romantic experience, and a movie star. Each person is
requested to fill in short but complete answers to all four
questions and then to pass all cards, face down, to a fifth
person who mixes and holds them.
You turn over the top card and show it to the audience,
asking, "I wonder whose handwriting this is? This is
certainly a person in a hurry. Of course that goes with the
horoscope sign here, Libra." All four persons who answered
questions are asked to stand, look at the card and think to
themselves, "I am not a Libra!"
"Libras are lousy liars," you alliterate, "even when they
are just thinking about fibbing." Pointing to one of the
four you continue, "You have guilt written all over your
face - you a re the Libra and your birthday is...October 23,
correct?" The noted participant agrees and is asked to sit
down.
You take another card from the face-down pile held by the
fifth helper, look at the answers written there and remark,
"This person's first kiss was in 1992. Would you please
think of where you were at the time? I mean the city, not
just 'the back seat'. In that year, you (pointing to one of
the three still standing) were in ...Columbus Ohio. Am I
right?" The amazed helper agrees and takes his seat. Two
participants remain standing.
A third card is looked at, and then you say, "Both of you,
close your eyes please. One of you wrote a friend's phone
number, (reading it from the card) 488-0980, so imagine
dialing your friend right now. Someone answers - a man." You
point to one of the two participants and announce, "Think
about the person you are calling...it's your friend, Phillip
Mason! Is that true?" Of course it is.
"My awesome powers," you mention with tongue-in-cheek, "have
already identified who wrote on that last card, but rather
than reading the information, let's leave it unseen and work
directly with his mind." As you draw with a felt marker on a
large pad, he is requested to visualize the movie whose
title he wrote down and to visualize meeting one of the
stars in person for an autograph. "What is the celebrity
name you entered on your card," you ask. "Tom Cruise," he
replies. "Let's go further. Think of your favorite movie
starring Tom Cruise...name it, please." He says it is
'Mission Impossible'. You turn the pad around to show the
'autograph' of Tom Cruise below the title, Mission
Impossible!
Shhhh! requires nothing other than a group of people ready
to be entertained. No sleights, no gimmicks, no special
performing conditions, no stooges, and nothing to replace
make Shhhh! outstanding Mentalism. You get the cards, pens
detailed instructions, and tips for 'extra touches' to use
with this entertaining routine.
MY COMMENTS:
Can you say "Sneak Thief"? Yep, that's what this. It's an
updated version of Larry Becker's classic effect (it can be
found in Larry Becker's Stunners). The handling is quite
similar. The differences include the use of sturdy and
smaller cards which can be written on with wet-erase pens
and the use of a variety of information, as opposed to
drawings. Of course, the whole flavor of the presentation
is different. You also get a mini-recording device which
will allow you to perform a gag involving a telephone
ringing sound, but you don't have to use it. The ad fairly
represents the routine, though I'll quibble that it claims
there is "nothing to replace." You will have to eventually
replace the wet-erase pens, but that's a standard office
supply product that's easily replaceable.
I know that many may feel that the cute plastic cards will
make this more of a "mental magic" effect. This is
certainly a consideration as the information being revealed
(zodiac sign, birthday, a name, phone number, and other
chosen thoughts) makes this an easy-to-do Q&A act.
Experienced mentalists probably already have their own
favorite method of doing Q&A that doesn't involve plastic
cards. If you already have a strong Q&A routine, this
product is probably something you will not use.
On the other hand, there are a lot of features that make
this very atrractive. It's portable and can pack flat.
It's easy to use. You don't have to worry about replacing,
or carrying large amounts of, billets or papers. This, in
fact, is a great "entry level" Q&A routine as it utilizes
some classic and subtle principles which you'll be able
to use in other routines.
So, it really depends on whether you feel that this routine
will fit with your style. It's not as versatile as Sneak
Thief, as you must get the info that's already printed on
the cards, but its attractive smaller size makes it much
more portable and provides more of a variety of information
to reveal. As usual with Larry and Lee's products, the
cards are gorgeous and well-designed, and the routine is
well-thought out. The package includes two pages of
double-sided 8.5" x 11" instructions, plus the plastic
cards, four wet-erase pens, and the mini-recording device.
If this appeals to you, then this is definitely a powerful
routine you'll enjoy doing and it's certainly recommended.

EUGENE BURGER
EXPLORING MAGICAL PRESENTATION
JMOM Price: $31
Suggested Retail Price: $34.95
THE BLURB:
An intimate opportunity to learn from one of magic’s
greatest teachers, this DVD will help you think about your
performing style, and grow as a magical presenter.
We all know plenty of tricks, but how can we turn them into
memorable magic? In this DVD session, Eugene Burger explores
that topic, and provides specific examples—including fully
developed routines that you can adapt for your own
performances.
THE BLACK ENVELOPE VARIATIONS A classic (and amazing)
prediction of a playing card, explained in detail with
discussions of eight different presentational approaches,
including:
A DREAM OF YOU • THE DEATH CARD • THE GAMBLER’S FATE and
Eugene’s favorite, INEVITABILITY
plus—
FADING COIN
Imagination becomes reality! Invented by Tomoyuki Takahashi,
and taught with his kind permission, this astonishing
routine is nearly impromptu, and truly astonishing. Eugene
has invested a great amount of thought into getting the most
impact out of his presentation, and now he shares it with
you.
plus—
INVISIBILITY POWDER
Discover how a simple presentational premise can turn a good
trick into great one.
plus—
OB-SER-VO
Inspired by a Robert Neale effect, this was developed as a
“message” routine for corporate performances. Over time it
has evolved into one of the strongest audience participation
routines in the Burger repertoire.
plus—
OUT OF THIS WORLD
Years of exploring countless versions of this Paul Curry
classic have led to this approach. Eugene explains that
journey. Problems are solved and strengths are emphasized,
and the results are both practical and impressive.
Running Time Approximately 71min
MY COMMENTS:
Eugene Burger has become well-known, not only for being a
brilliant thinker and magician, but knowing how to make his
performances meaningful. This includes knowing how to
construct a tight script that keeps audiences interested.
This DVD comprises material that Eugene has included in his
lectures for a few years now. It's not only intriguing, but
an important look at how one presents magic and makes it
meaningful. To that end, Eugene stresses the differences
betweeen stunts and meaningful presentations. Though Eugene
points out that many magicians (and I'd add that some
mentalists) certainly are content with presenting stunts,
I'd posit that mentalism loses so much more when presented
as a stunt and the lessons Eugene teaches to help avoid that
are invaluable.
Interestingly, most of the effects he presents on this DVD
can be considered and performed as mentalism or magic,
depending on your style. The Black Envelope Variations is
an effect using a Koran Deck, a mentalists favorite. Eugene
demonstrates and discusses eight very different variations
of this one effect and how each one can have a different
meaning and a different impact on audiences. Fading Coin is
an effect that Eugene has been using in his lecture for
quite some time. Basically, a thought-of coin is revealed
to be the only coin in the performer's hand. Ob-Ser-Vo is
an exercise in demonstrating that different people will
witness the same event differently. And, Out of this World,
the Paul Curry classic, is one of the all-time great
mentalism card effects.
There is no question that I agree that a well-scripted
presentation is essential to the success of any mentalism
routine. Not having a tight, well-thought script is the
bane of most mentalists as one of the very biggest problems
with most mentalists is that they bore audiences by
overtalking. I'll be even more daring and say that there
are many mentalists who feel they know this but have a
difficult time seeing that they can use this information.
This disc is an invaluable lesson in how to present routines
effectively. If you've never seen Eugene lecture on this
material, you should. And, even if you have, this disc is
well worth having in your DVD collection. I'd recommend any
good DVD or book on presentational theory over one with
dozens of tricks. It's one thing to know routines. It's
quite another to know how to present them, and that's the
point of this DVD. Highly recommended.
By the way, even though most of the effects deal with cards,
the point is the presentational theories. In other words,
if you don't like using playing cards in mentalism, this
disc still has a lot to offer.

JAY SANKEY
REVELATIONS SHIRT
JMOM Price: $36
Suggested Retail Price: $40
THE BLURB:
The Revelations Shirt looks just like a very cool black
t-shirt with a few hip, understated designs, but hidden in
the graphics of the shirt are SEVEN incredible revelations
including three different selected cards, the date on a
borrowed coin, a classic mathematical force, and even two
different ESP symbols! Perfect for both magicians and
mentalists, the Revelations Shirt is the ultimate secret
weapon!
FOLD #1
A card is selected and the spectator shows it to her
friends. (It's the Ace of Diamonds! Shhh!) The magician
draws attention to the intricate pattern on his hip black
t-shirt and mentions that the pattern is "a combination of a
Rorschach inkblot and a crystal ball." The audience is
skeptical, but the magician asks everyone to stare at the
pattern and concentrate on the image of the selected card.
"Do you see it on my shirt?" he asks. When everyone admits
they don't, the magician offers to "make it a little easier
to see" and with a single fold of the shirt the image of A
SINGLE LARGE DIAMOND suddenly appears!
FOLD #2
Everyone is still freaking out over the appearance of the
Ace of Diamonds shape when the magician suggests, "Let's try
it again." This time someone only PEEKS at a card (it’s the
Two of Hearts) and holds the pack in their own hands. Once
again the performer asks the spectator to concentrate on the
card they have in mind and focus on the front of the black
t-shirt. And again, with just a single quick fold of the
shirt TWO LARGE HEARTS appear!
Now everyone REALLY loses it!
THE TAG
A card is selected and the magician says, "If I don't find
your card, I'll give you the shirt off my back, okay? Don't
get too excited ladies. And just so you know, the shirt is
100% cotton, not polyester, so it's quite a prize." But when
the magician executes a fancy flourish and turns over the
top card, it's NOT the selected card. He tries again, but
again fails to find the card the spectator has in mind.
"Well, I DID say if I failed to find your card I'd give you
the shirt off my back. And like I said, it's 100% cotton.
Just take a look at the label." The performer rolls back the
collar of the shirt and pulls out the tag and everyone sees
a large image of the selected card PRINTED ON THE LABEL!
THE DATE
The date of a borrowed coin magically appears on the front
of the shirt!
Or you can have four cards selected and they turn out to be
an Ace, a 9, an 8 and a 6…all perfectly matching the 1986
date ON THE FRONT OF THE SHIRT!
THE NUMBER PREDICTION
The wonder worker admits to having "some psychic abilities"
and suggests a test. He asks a spectator to think of ANY
3-digit number and write it down on a business card or
cocktail napkin. (And it really is a free choice!) The
performer turns his back on the audience to make sure he
can't 'get a peek' and instructs the spectator to carry out
a few simple calculations with the freely selected number.
When the spectator arrives at a final total everybody
suddenly notices that the exact same number is PRINTED ON
THE BACK OF THE MAGICIAN’S T-SHIRT!
ESP FORCE #1
Using a collection of ESP symbol cards printed on the back
of the Revelations Shirt, Max Maven's classic 'Finger Chart
Force' is taken to a whole NEW LEVEL OF AMAZEMENT! Watch the
video preview to see this mind-bender in action!
ESP FORCE #2
Jay experimented for a long time trying to figure out a way
to REPEAT the "Finger Chart Force" and arrive at a DIFFERENT
symbol - and Jay figured it out! This repeat demonstration
is the ultimate psychic convincer!
THE SHIRT
Inspired by the Diesel™ brand of hip, high-end casual
clothing, each Revelations Shirt is manufactured from 100%
pure ultra cotton and the graphics are printed with a "soft
white" ink to give the shirt a hip, pre-washed and 'worn-in'
look. And the intricate design on the front of the shirt
features a very subtle combination of arrows, snakes, stars
and hieroglyphics for a very cool design that is both
universal and timeless.
Instead of being a cheap-looking shirt that shouts, "Look at
me, I'm a dorky magician!" the Revelations Shirt is the kind
of cool, goes-with-anything t-shirt that will fit right in
with your own casual style. The Revelations Shirt is also
the perfect way to show off your 'guns!'
ORDER THE RIGHT SIZE FOR YOU!
The Revelations Shirt is available only in black and in
small, medium, large and X-large sizes. To make sure you
have enough room to easily fold the front of the shirt,
please order a size that is 1 size larger than the size you
usually wear. For example, Jay is a small guy (5” 5’ and 155
lbs) and he usually wears a LARGE Revelations Shirt.
THE DVD
Along with the complete details on all 7 mind-blowing
revelations, the full-length DVD also explores such
questions as, "Is it better to reveal the hidden symbols
slowly or quickly?" And, "With mathematical forces is it
better to involve a calculator or just use pen and paper?"
Jay also shares a ton of subtle psychological pointers
learned over countless performances with the Revelations
Shirt in the real world.
The DVD also includes valuable information on:
5 COIN SWITCHES including the Bobo Switch, Thumb Palm
Switch, Palm-to-Palm Switch, Shuttle Pass Switch and Jay's
own "Perfect Coin Switch."
5 MULIPLE CARD FORCES including the Crimped Pack force,
Vernon Substitute Transfer, Riffle Force, Henry Christ Force
plus Jay's clever work on the classic Criss Cross Force that
makes it even more deceptive!
11 SINGLE CARD FORCES including the Second Deal Force,
Wichita Slip, Spread Force, Buckle Force, Double Lift Force,
Topper Peek Force, Topper Pull-Out Force, Classic Force,
Dribble Force, Mentalist's Equivoque and Jay's handling tips
with half a Forcing pack.
The Revelations Shirt! Perform just one or two of the
revelations and completely freak people out or perform
several of them together and START YOUR OWN RELIGION!
Wear your act on your back!
Whether you perform magic, mentalism or both, The
Revelations Shirt is a perfect addition to your act! Comes
complete with specially printed shirt, tag, and exciting
instructional DVD featuring a powerful collection of Jay's
favorite single and multiple card forces!
Running Time Approximately 80min
MY COMMENTS:
Sure, it's gimmicky. Sure, the tricks are "classics" or, at
least, basic. Sure, it may not be everyone's cup of tea.
But, hey, it's Jay Sankey and, like most products he
creates, it's fun. If you wear T-shirts, then I'm sure
you'll get some mileage out of this. The blurb covers
pretty much everything. If you go to Jay's website,
www.Sankeymagic.com, you'll find an online video of Jay
demonstrating this. The DVD is refreshingly complete as Jay
teaches a lot more card forces and coin switches than he
needed to.
As to the shirt itself, it's black and it comes in four
different sizes. If you watch the video, you know that some
of the revelations involve folding the material of the
shirt, so you definitely want to make sure that you order a
shirt that will be loose on you, meaning that you should
order a slightly larger size than you normally do (unless
you normally wear very loose T-shirts).

MY COMMENTS:
This disc is produced by Miracle Factory, who's published
some of the finest biographies of magicians ever produced.
And I offer this disc for historical purposes. Houdini
wasn't a mentalist but he certainly was involved in seances
and psychic work, though he wasn't an advocate of it. I
think most know that Harry spent many years after his mother
died trying to contact her in the spirit world and debunking
all those who had false claims of abilities of speaking to
the dead. There are techniques exposed and, as I said, it
does make fascinating reading from a historical perspective.
Especially interesting for mentalists would be the "Miracle
Mongers," "A Magician Among the Spirits," and "Houdini
Exposes the Tricks Used by the Boston Medium 'Margery'."
