the recent past newsletters are archived there.

It's time to do more gigs and then watch your wallets being
emptied again. Lots of great new stuff is now available.
And, now that I'm getting the Journal of the Mind back on
track, I've let the Marketplace stuff get a bit behind. I
guess it'll be awhile before I stop playing catch up.
Speaking of the Journal of the Mind, there's been some
discussion on a particular forum about it. Thanks to all
those who said kind words about me and the Journal. Stuart
Cumberland, who is the feature of the December 2007 issue,
wrote, "Frankly--and I've told [Jheff] this personally--he's
WAY undercharging for what he's giving. That's his business,
mind you, but it's ridiculously low priced." I've been told
that by many people, but it was deliberately priced that
low. With such things as the upcoming Conversations of
the Mind series, and sales such as the recent 25% off
everything March Madness sale, I have to agree with him.
So, I will be raising the price at some point this year,
probably during the summer. If you're thinking of
joining, now is a good time. See below for details.
Along with the new items in this issue, I've also added
Andrew Gerard's CARDIAC and Howard Adams' 666 MENTALISM.
Information and comments on those products are already on my
website, but I'll include them in an upcoming newsletter. I
also will be putting out a special newsletter with the books
by Paul Brook. Also, Loren Tindall just sent me Ron Martin
and Larry Baukin's CASUAL LITTLE MIRACLES, their follow-up
to QUICK COMMERCIAL CARD READING. I'll be adding that to
the site this week and as soon as I look through this
over-100 page e-book and all the goodies that come along
with it, I'll post my comments.
And what else is coming? Let's see. There's upcoming stuff
from Haim Goldenberg, Andrew Gerard, Jack Kent Tillar, Docc
Hilford, Larry Becker & Lee Earle, Marc Spellman, Richard
Osterland, Luke Jermay, Alexander Black & Troy Cherry,
Kenton Knepper, and Devin Knight. Yeah, that list isn't
really surprising, but you know their stuff is always
good, as a general rule.
**** HUGE NEW SUPPLEMENT FOR MIRABILL
Dr. Bill has added a brand new supplement to MIRABILL, which
has been getting much deserved praise. This new supplement
features ideas from Deddy Corbuzier, Joshua Quinn, Greg Arce,
Mike Sturgeon, Tony Eye, Jim Callahan, and John Bannon. It's
included free with your purchase, which means that you now
get twice as many pages for your money.
http://www.marketplaceofthemind.com/Mirabill.html
**** INDEPENDENT INVENTION STRIKES AGAIN!
Two books which I'm including in this issue contain effects
which are extremely similar. "Your Lucky Nite" by Bryn
Reynolds, in THE SAFWAN PAPERS, and "A Clean Game" by Nimrod
Harel, in SHALOSH: STAGE WORK, are both versions of the Bank
Night routine that work on the same principle and have very
similar handlings. Since both live continents apart, I'm
fairly sure that this is a case of independent invention.
And, perhaps, it has appeared in another earlier version
from someone else. Right now, I'm not sure. Of the two, I
prefer Nimrod Harel's routine, because he has such a unique
and dramatic presentation, but they're both good and worth
checking out.
**** SCRIPTING MAGIC TEMPORARILY OUT OF PRINT
This wonderful book has been selling extremely well. So
well, in fact, that it just sold out of its first printing.
It has gone back to press, but it will be a few months
before it's available again.
**** DISCONTINUED ITEMS
Gerard Bakner's Esoteric DVD and the MINI SUPER SHARPIE are
no longer available.
**** BOOKS BEING REPRINTED
For those who may have missed Jim Sisti's MAGIC MENU (both
volumes) or several hard-to-find volumes of APOCALYPSE, they
are coming back into print. There's some great stuff in
these books and some wonderful mentalism mixed in. I won't
be cataloging these as they are not specifically mentalism,
but you can always special order them. Okay, my very first
published item appears in that first volume of APOCALYPSE,
so this is kind of a plug.
**** FROZEN IN TIME
I do have several of these in stock now, but once they're
gone, there will be another long wait to get them. This is
really a very cool little pocket piece of mentalism.

**** PAST NEWSLETTERS NOW ON-LINE
Finally, I broke down and just decided to be plain lazy.
Instead of taking the time to re-format the newsletters and
make them all pretty looking for the blog, I decided I'd
rather spend the time on other more important things like,
oh, keeping the website up to date with the current
mentalism products and my comments.
So, there's a whole new section where you can see all the
past newsletters. If you subscribed and aren't receiving
them, either check to make sure that the newsletters aren't
being considered spam by your Internet provider, or
re-subscribe (which is the easiest).
***** MARKETPLACE MEMBERSHIP CLUB FOR 2008 AVAILABLE NOW!
The new issue of Jheff's Journal of the Mind spotlights Paul
Brook, who just recently published an incredible new book
which is featured in the issue, The Alchemical Tools. To
get this issue, you need to buy a membership in the
Marketplace of the Mind.
For the $37 cost you get a subscription to the 2008 issues
of Jheff's Journal of the Mind, an all-new e-zine for
mentalists, an additional 5% discount off merchandise from
the Marketplace of the Mind, and many other very cool
features. If you want a taste of what you get, check out the
preview edition of the Bonus #0 issue featuring Jack Kent
Tillar. Go to the website and click on the banner at the
top. Or use the link below.

***** THE FRIENDS OF THE MARKETPLACE
Don't forget to check out the new Friends of the Marketplace
section. This is for those creators who are producing
wonderful products that I don't carry. This is because, to
save overhead, I order as needed from my distributor, and
these creators aren't mass distributing it. If you'd like
me to review your product and help you sell it, then you'll
find details about the Friends of the Marketplace program on
the website. There's a button on the left hand side for you
to click on.
I've just added THE SAFWAN PAPERS by Bryn Reynolds and
RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS by Jerome Finley, both solid
collections of memorable, mentalism material. Also,
new to the section are BILL MASON'S SENSATIONAL by E. Raymond
Carlyle, which is a wonderful Q&A act, and Dr. Bill's
MIRABILL, an elegant update on a Stewart James classic.
Outlaw-Effects have a beautiful new aged book called THE
WITCHES' ALMANAC and it is their best aged book yet. Enrique
Enriquez has a wonderful new e-book on the Tarot, LOOKING AT
THE MARSEILLES TAROT, which is suitable for both beginners
and experienced readers. Also new to the section are Ron
Martin's THE TAROT READER'S NOTEBOOK, a must-have for Tarot
readers; Joshua Quinn's DUPLICITY, which takes your favorite
drawing dupe routine to the next level; Loren Tindall's
beautiful new THE DELPHI PORTAL, which is a must-have prop
for anyone who is a reader; and Gene Nielsen's THE MAGICK
YEARS, a jam-packed e-book filled with over 70 professional
and varied routines.
Remember, I don't make a dime on this stuff. I do this
because I think the stuff is very good and worth it.

Until next time. -- Jheff

BRYN REYNOLDS
THE SAFWAN PAPERS
Suggested Retail Price: $30
Available at:
http://www.outlaw-effects.com
Comb-bound hardcopy available at:
http://www.mindmagic.myfoolmoon.com/whats_new.html
THE BLURB:
This eBook has finally been released, & contains several of
Bryn’s latest mentalism routines and utilities.
Perhaps you know him from his some of his other separately
released effects such as The BusinessCOIN Prediction, $: THE
Serial Number Divination, ESPnvelope, or his DOUBLE-DOWN
casino cards effect, which was recently featured on Richard
Osterlind’s DVDs No Camera Tricks.
These effects primarily rely on psychological and verbal
manipulation, as opposed to focusing on props or gimmicks.
They are designed to be performed almost anywhere, at
anytime, with either none, or very little, preparation.
While the routine names may have been altered to so as not
to tip any of the methodologies utilized, here is a brief
description of each of the items:
SEVEN – A one-card variant of the Kolossal Killer genre of
effect…with one big difference: there are NO outs. NONE. The
one-and-only prediction you place on the table before the
routine begins will match the card the spectator envisions.
Bold, raw, and almost always works. And in the rare
occasions it doesn’t, you still get credit!
BCK - By using real psychometry (and a clever subtlety) you,
and perhaps a participant, will be able to determine the
outcome of an experiment of several runs of “object placed
under one of several items.” And if you want, you may show
you predicted in writing the exact results. NO gimmicks at
all, and everything is borrowed.
YOUR LUCKY NITE – Hopefully, all are worth more than the
price of admission, but this one seems to shine with a
little more luster: an anytime-anyplace routine with a Bank
Night flavor. Those whom I highly respect have said the
following about this effect:
Impossible to backtrack, no sucker ending, and participant
shines as the star….and easy to prepare!
BOHT: My pet. Please read my story why in the book. A subtle
cultural difference has been refined & exploited to make the
“Which Hand” type of effect a perfect success…but only once
per performance…..THE perfect out for when mechanical,
physical, or psychological outs and tells may fail….and it
stands as a methodology all on its own!
******STRING: Figure out the “asterisks,” if you will, but
you will still enjoy the storyline and thinking behind it: A
participant is brought back in time to an ancient carnival
scam in which an entertaining story is told. By eliminating
4 out of 5 colored strings, she wins a very nice prize for
the performer through her own FREE choices. No Equivique at
all. NONE. In the interest of full-disclosure, SOME of you
may have to buy a $20 prop, but most already have it. It is
perfect.
$4 Billet Index – It is what it is…The least you will ever
spend on an invisible 8/16 billet index that renders all
specialty Predator-type wallets unnecessary. Complete with
photos on how to build one!
Here is what others are saying about THE SAFWAN PAPERS:
RICHARD OSTERLIND:
“Bryn Reynolds is one of the most exciting creators I have
come across in many years. Whenever he sends me something it
is top notch and is usually an item I add to my repertoire.
THE SAFWAN PAPERS is the latest batch of material to peak my
interests. Developed in Iraq, for his fellow soldiers, the
material is dynamite! (Or C-4 given the situation!) There
are great routines, gadgets and gimmicks that will become
standard items in your act and just plain, good ole
straight-thinking behind powerful effects! One is already
slated for my next set of DVD’s. I highly - very highly -
recommend this book!”
BANACHEK:
“You know how to take an idea or effect, make it your own
and add a wonderful twist to them. Wonderful thinking and
inspirational. Keep up the great work; we need more original
thinkers like you in our ranks. Well done.”
MOSHE BOTWINICK:
“As in much of Bryn's work, these ideas, ploys, and
psychological refinements should be kept a military secret.
Reclassify these papers as Top Secret.”
CHUCK HICKOK:
"The Safwan Papers has several very clever ideas for the
serious mentalist. The emphasis is on language ... not
props. Your Lucky Nite could be sold as a separate routine."
MY COMMENTS:
Bryn Reynolds has quietly become a mentalism creator whose
work I always look forward to and highly recommend. His
thinking ranks right up there with the best of them and his
material is always recommended, if not in the must-have
category. The material presented here certainly holds up to
that expectation, and at least two of the six items (Your
Luck Nite and $4 Billet Index) could have been sold as
stand-alone effects or manuscripts at the single price of
this entire booklet.
"Your Lucky Nite" is an ingenious version of Bank Nite. The
routine, as written, doesn't play like most bank nite
routines where the participants select all the items but
one, which the performer keeps. However, it is still very
strong. With Bryn's permission, Richard Osterlind will be
including this in an upcoming set of DVDs. I haven't made a
"$4 Billet Index" yet, but I certainly will. This is a
great utility gimmick that every mentalist can use. It
won't take that much time to make and can be used with any
billfold wallet. "BOHT" is also very strong. It's more of
a technique to use in a "Ring of Truth" or "Kurotsoke" type
routine, but it's well worth knowing. "***** String" and
"BCK" are also very strong. Each requires a specific prop
that you probably have in your magic drawers. If not, they
are easily obtained for various prices, some of them
cheaply. "Seven" is a very unique take on Knepper's
Kolossal Killer. The thinking is top-notch, but I don't
think it's quite as versatile as Greg Arce's Scorch. Still,
it's definitely a worthy addition to this collection and
several top performers have already said they think very
highly of it.
If you're looking for strong, tested material that you will
use, then I can't recommend this highly enough. 56 pages.
(This is also available in a $30 comb-bound book which is
available directly from Bryn Reynolds)
NOTE: Shortly after I looked at this, I received Nimrod
Harel's SHALOSH: STAGE WORK. He has an effect in there
called A Clean Game. The presentation is slightly
different, but is essentially the same. Both books
are recommended and I'm sure this is a case of
independent invention.

JEROME FINLEY
RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS
Suggested Retail Price: $60
Available to:
http://www.sangomahealer.com/performersonly.html
THE BLURB:
My new offering "Random Acts of Kindness" is now available.
“Godspeed” – a psychological illusion for effectively
“speeding” time up for a person.
“Always on my mind” – Tools and techniques to assure we are
REMEMBERED by our spectators and create natural interest,
intrigue and rapport wherever we go.
“A Bright New Outlook” – My take on the “Teardrop” effect in
magic and mentalism and how I use it to seal my private
readings; a very special moment to be shared when you want
and need to create the deepest impact possible. For
entertainment purposes only and with DT3's blessing of
course!
“In the Madhouse” – an imaginary scene is created in the
mind of a participant and EXPERIENCED in real time by the
performer! Easy to do and garners wonderful reactions, this
piece is ripe with psychological subtleties and ruses. One
can apply this work to virtually any drawing duplication or
covertly obtained piece of information for a very ‘REAL’
feeling revelation.
“The Crimson Wall of Lictalon” – “Building Blocks” type
strategies for creating extra phenomenon within all of our
performances.
“Playing Card Readings” – a simple system that any magician
or mentalist can use to begin giving effective readings with
playing cards immediately.
“Into the Twilight” – My own take on the classic Paul Harris
effect, “Twilight Angels” for use in magical flavored
mentalism and celestial bizarre magic. Comes with GREAT
praise from Mr. Harris himself!
“The Ideometer Key” – a presentational ploy for the “Haunted
Key” effect. I also tip my hypnotic induction technique with
the key as a tool for mild trance like states.
And much more!
Introduction and cover design by Brad “Scarnecky” Gordon.
Here's what others are saying about this work -
“I feel a strange sense of pride in the material I found
within ‘Random Acts of Kindness.’ In my first publication ‘7
Deceptions’ I set forth a road to be traveled by performers.
This road encouraged building a more personal and affecting
relationship with your spectators. It also championed the
use of suggestion and related methods in our work. At the
time of publication the book caused something of a stir.
People questioned whether this path was a wise one to walk.
A few people saw the distant destination and began their own
journey. Along the voyage I have crossed paths with many of
these travelers.
Jerome is one of those who lead the way. I have had the
pleasure of seeing Jerome perform his material in a wide and
varied set of conditions from loud nightclubs and bars to
formal performance. I can safely say I enjoy watching Jerome
perform and I always take something from his written works
and ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ is no different. I have
enjoyed the material Jerome sets out within this manuscript
in his performances. I took several ideas and inspirations
from the book. I recommend this to any serious thinking
performer.
We will see you further down the path.” - Luke Jermay
"Jerome...really beautiful stuff. This is the direction I've
always hoped that magic would move to...some kind of hybrid
combination of therapy, performance art and astonishment.
Your presentational work on twilight angels is transcendent"
- Paul Harris
"In a near future 'psychology' won't be the little box we
use to lock magic down, but the key that those of us willing
to study the human mind will use to become true magical
beings. At that point a book like this will become an
indispensable grimoire for the magicians of the mind." -
Enrique Enriquez
“Jerome Finley is one of the rare people who can make magic
seem REAL. If you want to learn (and experience) the closest
thing possible to REAL magic, then you need ‘Random Acts of
Kindness’ by Jerome Finley.” – Dale A. Hildebrandt
MY COMMENTS:
I started to write a really long piece about this and after
looking at realized that most of it was redundant. There's
really not much more to say that hasn't been said in the
blurb. Jerome Finley has created some very beautiful and
memorable performance pieces. Most of them contain powerful
psychological subtleties and many of them are Jerome's
versions of classic mentalism effects. If you're a fan of
Kenton Knepper, Luke Jermay, or Paul Brook, you definitely
want to look into this 42 page e-book. This certainly may
not suit everyone's taste and style, but it's certainly
worth getting as there is a lot of fascinating thinking from
Jerome Finley, who is definitely one of mentalism's latest
creators of memorable routines.

NIMROD HAREL
SHALOSH: STAGE WORK
JMOM Price: $50
Suggested Retail Price: $55
THE BLURB:
Nimrod Harel is one of the busiest mentalists in the world.
He has his own television show ('Inconceivable') which has
just completed its fourth season, and he performs daily
before company audiences with his original mentalist show.
After his first booklet "SHALOSH" SOLD OUT!!! Now comes his
second book: SHALOSH - STAGE WORK .
Limited Edition - ONLY 444 copies printed - so hurry up
before there are no more. Each book is numbered!
'Fire at Will' - A clean as a whistle Russian Roulette act
using a staple gun. The audience sees one gun loaded and
fired and then mixed with three other guns. Then the game
begins as the volunteer chooses freely which of the guns
will be fired, until the last gun is proven to be the loaded
gun. There are no notes, no pre-show or other lowly mental
magic diversions- only the guns and free choice. No Russian
roulette act with staple guns being performed today even
comes close to the simplicity and perfection of this
routine.
BIBLE - Anyone who performs 'Add a Number' with a calculator
must see what Harel does with this classic. How can you
allow the audience to do the last calculation in their
heads? How can you set the entire crowd in motion? And most
importantly, how can you incorporate company values into
your show? This is a must for anyone working with company
clients or interested in subliminal message routine themes.
Clean Game - The end of all Bank Night routines. The
volunteer hides a cheque or bill inside one of five numbered
envelopes. At no point does the mentalist get near the
envelopes or make eye contact with them, either before or
after the cheque is put in, and yet he knows which envelope
is the one with the money. There are no gimmicks of any
kind. Clean, clean, clean. You will laugh out loud reading
about this method. A television stage performance is
attached.
Bonus: For the first time, Harel reveals the secret behind
his Nail Gun Routine, which was performed by Eran Raven in
'Phenomenon' and gives general permission to anyone wishing
to use it in their stage or television performances. This
routine is utterly devoid of gimmicks and can be executed
with almost all nail guns with no preparation at all.
Another example of ingenuity.
The presentation of these effects is adapted to large
audiences (50-1000 people), they are incredibly practical
(less than 60 second preparation time), is untainted with
any mental magic and all fits inside a suitcase. This is a
rare opportunity to get acquainted with one of the most
successful and creative mentalists alive today. A must for
any professional mentalist.
Pages 62 - Softbound
MY COMMENTS:
This little book contains three fabulous effects. Though
I'm not a fan of Russian Roulette routines, the staple/nail
gun version that's presented here is powerful. I also like
BIBLE which is a very cool add-a-number routine that's quite
different. Clean Game is also a very clever version of the
Bank Night plot. These latter two items are ones that I'm
going to be putting into my repertoire immediately. Each
routine is detailed. Despite it being easy and relatively
safe, by definition, the staple/nail gun routine is
dangerous, but I think you know that. BIBLE does rely on a
gimmick which most mentalists have, but if not, there's a
way to do it without it. It's explained in the book. Clean
Game does require some preparation, but it's pretty much
just getting and numbering small envelopes and making the
message slips that go inside. I must say that I was very
surprised by the stuff in this book. I found it to be very
strong and practical. Please note that this is a limited
edition and I don't know how long this will be available.
Frankly, I would have been satisfied it was limited to only
twenty-five people. Buy it now, while you can.
(NOTE: Clean Game is very similar to Bryn Reynolds' Your
Lucky Nite, from his recently released Safwan Papers. The
methods are identical and the presentations are very
similar. I know this is a case of independent invention.
That said, as much as I like Bryn's work, and as much as I
like Your Lucky Nite, I think Clean Game is the better
version, due to the unique dramatic presentation. However,
they're both good.)

LARRY BECKER & LEE EARLE
TEXAS FOOL'EM
JMOM Price: $153
Suggested Retail Price: $169.50
THE BLURB:
The Legend of Jack 'Treetop' Strauss
Play a little Texas Hold'em poker and you're bound to hear
the phrase, "All you need is a chip and a chair." It's
usually offered as encouragement to a player who just lost
most of his bankroll, reminding him that he still has a
small chance to win.
Few know the legend behind those words... Back in 1982, the
World Series of Poker bracelet winner Jack "Treetop" Strauss
was competing in a major Texas Hold'em event at a Las Vegas
Casino. While still in the early rounds, a lucky player hit
his draw and Strauss got busted out. As Jack was headed for
the bar to drown his disappointment, the dealer at the table
noticed a single chip where Strauss had been seated, tucked
almost unseen beneath the cushion around the playing
surface. Called back to the table to play that lonely chip,
Treetop won the pot on the next hand and went on to finish
the tournament in first place.
A great background story, especially when it's true, makes
good magic even better. Texas Fool'em is a presentation that
allows you to re-create the historic moment behind that
poker wisdom, in a manner that will amaze and delight your
audience.
Following a brief demonstration of Texas Hold'em poker's
unique play,
* They freely cut and deal the starting hand;
* They secretly select the amount of the bet;
* They decide which casino hosts the action;
* They make the best hand they can. Yet...
Every detail is predicted in a 25-year old magazine
clipping!
Texas Fool'em is much more than a card trick - it's a
complete short routine, complete with authentic deck, chips,
and 'VIP cards' that are sufficiently compact to carry in
your shirt pocket, awaiting just the right moment to make a
timely and memorable impression.
You get everything you need for an enthralling presentation
that folks will talk about for years to come:
* Five genuine clay poker chips in denominations of $20,
$50, $100, $500, and $1000, each one a different, vibrant
color
* Ten plastic casino 'VIP cards' representing renowned
Las Vegas casinos
* Multiple copies of the historic magazine clipping.
* A complete pack of 52 cards assembled from canceled
poker decks bearing the back designs of the dozen major
casinos that used them at their tables
* One incredible gimmick that guarantees your final
prediction. It's not clipped, hidden, palmed, electronic, or
mechanical. It's simple to use, easy to employ, and so dang
clever you'll want to smile when you put it to work
* The detailed routine, word for word patter, and simple
handling to make this impressive effect a reputation maker
in your hands
* An online video featuring an after-dinner performance
for a lay audience plus extra presentation tips
* This is a Limited Edition product - only 500 sets have
been made.
A standard riffle shuffle is the only skill required.
MY COMMENTS:
Larry and Lee have come up with yet another unique effect
with quality props and a clever method. Then again, did you
expect anything less? When I first read the blurb, I
thought that this another variation on Casino Royale (e.g.,
Cruise Control, which I really like). It's not. The only
things that the two routines have in common are that it has
a gambling theme and it's a prediction effect. The
methodology is totally different, not to mention the
presentation itself. And if the presentation appeals to
you, you'll have loads of fun with this one.
Of the blurb, there are a few items to mention. It says
"Multiple copies of the historic magazine clipping." There
is only one copy. And the online video got delayed
(according to Larry) and is not available at the time of
this writing. It will be available and anyone who purchases
through me will get the information about it when it is
available. These are minor points and errors, and by no way
detracts from the quality of the props and thinking of the
routine, but need to be noted for those who do buy this.
Also, the deck does need to be arranged before each
performance, but Larry and Lee include a really nice tip on
how to do a one-time preparation of the deck so that the
re-set time is minimal. Again, this is not a critique, just
informational. This routine is a close-up effect and you
need a shirt or coat pocket in order to perform the effect.
It's also recommended that you get an additional item that
will help with re-setting the "incredible gimmick." It's
something you probably already have, but if you don't,
it's not a magical gimmick and should be very easy to get
one inexpensively.
The props come packaged in a small box, approximately 4" x
5.5" x 1" that includes three pages of instructions
(double-sided, stapled), five poker chips, some coin
envelopes, the VIP cards, the magazine, clipping, and the
special deck of casino cards.
