the recent past newsletters are archived there.

*********
"So, not much has been coming out in the world of mentalism
lately, eh?"  I've gotten several e-mails like this in the
past few weeks that are basically asking me about why I
haven't added anything to the website.  Certainly, it's not
a recent dearth of mentalism products.  I've just added a
bunch of things and have stuff backlogged and more stuff is
on the way.  (See the product update below)  I've just had a
bunch of projects lately (like the Mindvention lecture, the
Journal of the Mind, etc.) and time just flew by before I
realized I hadn't given the website and subscribers any
attention.  Yep, it's time to play catch up, as usual.

Now, I know the stuff in this newsletter may not be the the
products that you expected, but I'm trying to catch up and
you'll get another newsletter or two within the week, if all
goes as planned.  And, if you can't wait for my comments on
ANY mentalism product, drop me an e-mail before you drop
your money at your favorite Internet shop.  I'll be more
than happy than to respond with my thoughts.

A lot of people have asked me about CBS's The Mentalist,
David Blaine's recent special, and Cris Angel's Believe, his
new Cirque Du Soleil show in Vegas.  Briefly, I liked The
Mentalist but, based on the opening episode, felt it was too
serious for its own good.  USA's Psyche essentially plays
the same premise (a so-called "psychic" who solves crimes by
observation), only with more humor and the two shows are
just way too similar as far as I'm concerned.  I like the
characters more in Psyche, but I'll keep up with this new
show when I can.

I didn't see the Blaine special.  I heard about it and I've
better things to do with my time - like reviewing products
or even watching grass grow by the driveway.  Eventually, I
will see it.  As to Angel . . . well, I haven't seen his new
show, but the early buzz is that the show will have to work
real hard to overcome a foul reputation that it's getting.

Finally, I must acknowledge my sorrow at the world's loss of
Paul Newman.  He was a great actor and a classy guy.  My
father used to tell a great story about a vacation to a ski
resort in which he wanted some piece and quiet and so he
sent me, my brother, and the other kids we were with on the
trip, down to the lobby because Paul Newman and his wife,
JoAnne Woodward, were there.  After about an hour of peace,
my father thought he'd better check up on us as he started
feeling guilty for sending us down to badger a movie star.
When he got to the lobby, Paul was sitting on an ottoman in
the center of the lobby holding an impromptu news conference
with about a dozen or so kids.  Moments later, when there
was an announcement for the sleigh ride, Paul said that he
had to go (as that was why he was there), but he'd be glad
to talk some more if we met up with him again.  Frankly, I
was about 10 at the time and probably hadn't seen more than
one or two of his films.  I don't recall this incident as
well as my father did, but I never forgot that he showed me
that day how a real star should treat his fans.

**** DECEIT
I just got this from Colin McLeod, who wanted me to give you
my thoughts on it.  You need to act fast if you want it.  He
only has less than a dozen left and by the time you read
this, they may be sold out.  If so, I apologize, but this is
a limited edition.

**** KENTON KNEPPER
Kenton has decided to release many items that are available
only on his website.  Make sure you subscribe so that you
can get news of it.  He does have many downloadable works
and check it out.  This newsletter contains his latest
effort which, again, is only available through his website.
Here's the link:

**** JACK TILLER'S DUET
The corrected editions should be in my hands next week and
then I'll be shipping them out.  That is, of course,
assuming the printer didn't screw up again.

the Palace Station in Las Vegas.  Luke Jermay, Marc
Spelmann, Docc Hilford, Christopher Taylor, Paul Vigil, Mark
Strivings, Lior Manor, Rick Maue, Paul Draper, and some guy
who uses his first, deliberately-misspelled first name to
impress people.  (Yeah, that's me, of course).  It's still
not to late to make reservations and join in the fun.  If
you're interested, here's the link.

COLIN MCLEOD
DECEIT
Suggested Retail Price: £35
Available at:
http://www.mentalentertainment.co.uk

THE BLURB:
The next step in chair predictions.

Three, or more, people sit on any chair on stage, take any
envelope and think of different thoughts. Not only have you
predicted where they will sit, you predict the exact thought
they are thinking as it has been printed and placed inside
the envelope they are holding!

There is No Pre Show, Stooging, Technology, Gaffed
Envelopes, Assistants... Required!

The chair prediction concept has long been a favourite idea
of mine and I have been toying with ideas for as long as I
can remember.

Many fantastic routines exist where you predict where
someone will sit, however I decided I wanted to take it to
the next level and predict the exact thoughts people would
have while on stage... this is my result!

I have written an in depth look at the various techniques I
have applied within my own performances and I explain how
and why I made this my closing routine in my stage show. I
haven’t held back, I have given my exact progression of
routines, I explain my process for creating the routines I
use and explain the proper use of dual reality to ensure the
routine is incredibly powerful for everyone taking part and
watching the performance.

This is a limited edition E-Book for which only 50 will ever
be sold. I feel with all effects, there is a danger of too
many people doing the same things, I strive to make sure
what I am doing is unique, so by making this such a small
number you too will know what you are performing is
something very few others will re create.

I also feel that by selling this as an E-Book, you will
receive it almost immediately allowing you to study it much
quicker!

This routine has been designed for PERFORMERS who can add
this to their current act. Please understand performing
ability is essential with this routine as it has been
designed to play to a real audience.

Technical Aspects- The file is around 8.5Mb. I aim to send
files out within a maximum 24 Hour window of your ordering.
If the file doesn’t seem to have arrived please check your
‘spam’ or ‘junk’ mail folder as your e-mail provider  may
have sent it directly there.

-Important-
I explain how to do all of my own chair tests and then
explain how to adapt my thinking to chair tests you may
already do!

Gary Kurtz’s Method will NOT be taught in this book. It’s
not mine to teach and ethically, as a professional performer
myself, I respect the creativity of others.

I will explain how you could use it if you want to adapt it
to my principles, however it is not essential for my
routines, which are the ones  you are investing in. These
are:

Chair Enigma- Predicting what people are thinking while
seated.

Chair Enigma2- Predicting the drawings of others while
seated.

These are taught in full and are the main routines other
professionals have seen me perform over the years.

While these are the two main routines you are purchasing, I
want to offer you as many bonus ideas, of my own, as
possible which will help make your chair prediction unique
to you!

"Chair routines have become a modern classic for stage
mentalists, unfortunately many have become a method puzzle
and become confusing to watch for our audiences... I have
actually heard people talking after a performers show saying
" I had no idea what the chairs were about ?" FINALLY a
routine that involves direct mind reading and predicting
your spectators behavior that easy to "get" for the
audience! I have become known for taking classic methods and
building a performance around them, so I know a gem when I
see it... and This is THE chair routine that you will love
to perform and more importantly your audience will be amazed
to watch.”
- Andrew Gerard

MY COMMENTS:
This is a VERY limited edition and Colin told me that  there
are less than a dozen left.  This is just a warning.  By the
time you read this or decide to get this, you may be too
late to purchase this.

So let's just cut to the chase.  If you're a fan of chair
routines, get this.  Colin has taken the best elements from
other chair routines and created an entirely new, inventive
routine.  Though he names others as inspiration I do feel
it's a cross between the work of Barrie Richardson and Bruce
Bernstein, which he lists as references in the book.  Other
inspirations include David Berglass, Patrick Redford, and
Gary Kurtz, among others.

There are some considerations for performing this routine.
They are very similar to those one would use when
considering doing a tossed-out deck routine.  I'm not saying
the methods and presentation are similar, just the
considerations.  In other words, you need to consider
audience size, audience make-up, and audience management.
This is going to sound vague, but there are some -- how
shall I say it? -- Kenton-esque qualities about this
handling.  Again, this is neither good nor bad, but merely
considerations.

I haven't watched many performers do chair routines and have
only read the details and descriptions of them.  I am
familiar with the ones referenced in Colin's manuscript.
Colin presents his basic ideas and then takes you through an
enlightening journey of how he developed various versions up
through the one he's currently using, and the routine that's
the main focus of this 45 page e-book.  Though I don't do
chair routines now, I will say if I ever do, I will use this
as a starting point to create my chair routine.  This is
definitely a worker's chair routine.

BILL CUSHMAN
THE FOURCE
Suggested Retail Price: $49.95
Available at:
http://outlaw-effects.com

THE BLURB:
The Fource takes well-established psychological methods that
all mentalists know and stretches them in completely new
directions and dimensions. Remember what Dr. Bill did with
Miraskill?

He took a seventy-year-old idea and turned it on its head,
breathing new life into a classic of mentalism and resulting
in the highly acclaimed Mirabill.

Or how about what Dr. Bill did with the venerable Instant
Magic Square? His inspired thinking morphed it into
Subliminal Square, a completely original and new
presentation published in Banachek’s award winning
Psychological Subtleties 2. Well, he's done it again.

The Fource is the result of one of those rare inspirations
that seemingly appear out of nowhere, arriving “wholecloth.”
The universal response from everyone who saw an early draft
was “Why haven’t we thought of this before?”

Along with Dr. Bill’s ideas, The Fource ebook includes
incredible innovations from Larry Becker, Millard Longman,
Alain Nu, Rick Roth, Greg Arce, Julian “Bev” Moore,
Alexandre, Sean Waters, Jerome Finley, Enrique Enriquez,
Lior Manor, Christopher Taylor, Bryn Reynolds and Tony
Razzano.

The Fource ebook also includes a JPG to be used in the tasty
Outlaw flavored contribution from Rick Roth that can play
close up or on the largest of stages. Dr. Bill supplies
links to sites that will allow you to easily customize your
own similar presentations.

Subliminal Square mentioned above has been reborn as the
“Sublime Subliminal Square” and is now completely hands off.
Just you, the audience and…The Fource.

Not only does Dr. Bill’s new ebook supply a variety of
meaningful presentations for his original methodology, it
also contains several routines that don’t use The Fource yet
tap into the same genre of “group dynamics.” Workers know
the value of effects that capture the imagination of the
entire audience and “gets those hands up.”

"Performing effects with all of the spectators is something
that many mentalists and magicians miss out on. The Fource
gives you several very strong options to employ with the
entire audience. I am using it in every show. Thanks Bill!"
Lior Manor

"Hi Bill. Eureka! Why the hell didn't I think of that!!!!
Well we all did, but never as (deleted for security
reasons). It's positively brilliant. An opener par
excellence. Great thinking Bill. Just my cup of tea. Simple,
powerful and memorable. You newest admirer."
Larry Becker

"I love simple, effective ideas that are truly new. The
Fource is a one of them. It takes standard material and
elevates it many notches. I have been using my own variation
of this effect in my current show, but plan to adapt The
Fource as a definite improvement! Many top names have
contributed to this work and I found myself considering
ways I can use some of their input for some my other
material. The book made me think and that's what I love.
This is not pipedream stuff, but workable presentations that
really hit home with your audience as a whole. I am excited
by this book!"
Richard Osterlind

"First of all, I think The Fource is absolutely the most
brilliant way of performing (deleted for security reasons).
Everything since Ted's "No-Prop Act" has been, I feel, a
re-hash, whereas your routine breathes completely new life
into it. I will be performing it your way from now on.
Wonderful stuff, Bill."
Gabe Abelson

"Stop talking about The Fource!!!! It's too good!!! It's
definitely one of those things that is going to have
everyone saying, 'You mean I had the ability to do this all
the time and I never thought of it!? What was I
thinking!!!!?'"
Greg Arce

MY COMMENTS:
The blurb is accurate.  When you read this e-book, the first
question going through your mind will be "Why didn't I think
of this?"  The second thing you may be saying to yourself
is, "I should have thought of it, so why am I paying for
it?"  And, of course, those are the best ideas: the ones
that are so simple that the majority of mentalists have
overlooked them.

Unfortunately, there's not much more I can say about this
without giving it away.  Experienced mentalists can
correctly guess that Bill has taken a classic force and
injected some fresh ideas into it.  This is also the
routine's only drawback, if one can call it that.  If one
does the same force in every act, then it will be definitely
be a consideration to those who work with repeat audiences.
However, the force can be varied somewhat as the e-book
details.  And, despite knowing that, Dr. Bill has created a
utility idea and a winning routine with solid thinking.  I
definitely recommend this.

KENTON KNEPPER
THE GUIDE
Suggested Retail Price: $20
Available at:
http://www.wonderwizards.com

THE BLURB:
A Meditation on Guided Meditation For Performers

Or

A Guide To Presenting Guided Meditations, Linguistic
Influence, Suggestibility, Relaxation, and Inner Guidance

A Wonder Wizards Direct EXCLUSIVE

"The Guide" is an intense example of Kenton's brilliant use
of words and suggestion, and how he can create deep
influence with seemingly simple words and phrases. This is
an advanced application of Wonder Words and suggestion.

You will learn how Kenton has created a side-business by
offering "guided meditations" to mentalism, hypnosis
clients, and others interested in "the mental arts."

"The Guide" is a guided meditation program as developed by
Kenton. It allows you to become an instant expert and help
others follow you as you take over the guided meditation
Kenton begins on the audio program. Or you can say nothing
at all, and still be perceived an expert in the mental arts.

Whether you have been around guided meditations for decades
or this is new to you, Kenton's work on the subject will
thrill and impress you and your audiences.

What else will "The Guide" do for you?

It's a new market, a new way of getting business, a new way
for performers to be taken seriously - and that's for
starters.

If you do mentalism, hypnosis, weerd or bizarre magic, have
stressed-out corporate clients, or just want to study new
ways Kenton uses his magical words, then The Guide is for
you.

Many mental or psychic entertainers are hounded for classes
on intuition. Many hypnotists and trance illusionists are
asked for free help being “hypnotized.” No performer
incorporating suggestion into their work should be oblivious
to the needs and desires of the Public who wish to have help
from their cherished performer. Kenton's work and creations
with guided meditations have become the perfect legal and
easy solution to all of this and much more.

The Guide has become a side-business in other aspects; a new
way to help others while helping your own business, a
promotional tool for your performances, and a novel solution
to the old problem of audiences taking you too seriously and
wanting your help.

Allen Zingg On…

Why Should I Perform The Guide and For Whom Should I Do So?

You are about to explore the “whys and wherefores” of
Kenton’s The Guide. You will learn not only how and why this
special guided meditation works but also how and where it
can be useful to you and your clients and even audiences. If
you are:

· A Mentalist: You can use the audio meditation to add
authenticity to your performances, playing it before, in the
middle or at the end of your performance. This is ideal for
private parties and can help to differentiate you from other
performers. Translation: greater opportunity for
performances and higher fees.

· A Reader: You will be able to use the meditation as an
incredibly useful tool to working with and helping your
clients. The audio will give you a way of helping your
clients relax and begin to do their own healing work, or
work toward their objectives. As such, it can be used as a
standalone session, and it may also be used to begin a
reading session to put the client in a positive and
receptive state of being. As well, it might be used at the
end of a reading session to help the client begin to
internalize what he or she has “discovered” during the
preceding reading session. And, there’s no reason why you
can’t use the meditation program more than once — results:
richer experiences for your clients, and more opportunity
for multiple sessions with clients.

· A Mentalist or Magician for entertainment only: You may
never play the audio program for any paying audience if
that’s either not your style, or the venues don’t fit. But
what you will get from playing the audio program and
studying this manuscript is the value of understanding
Kenton’s special language patterns, and specific
actions/language sets that you can use in your own for
entertainment only performances. These will increase the
impact of specific effects and your performance overall.
Whether you have Kenton’s Wonder Words series or not, you
will benefit equally from this real world application of
many of his techniques and have a chance to see and
experience just how powerful and effective they are.

· An Interested Person: That is, just for yourself, playing
the audio will help you meditate and relax. If you are a
stressed out performer, this alone is worth the price. If
you are a creative soul, entering this state can add to your
creativity.

If you like Wonder Words… The Guide is a must-study. - Allen

MY COMMENTS:
"You too can perform hypnosis minutes after opening this
package."  I know many, including myself, who cringe when
you hear lines like this.  I even cringe if there are lines
that are even close.  "Read this book and learn all you need
to know about hypnosis."  When you play with someone's mind,
as hypnosis clearly does, one single book will not teach you
everything.  It will provide some valuable information and
get you started, but more education needs to happen.

However, letting you instantly perform hypnosis on someone
is exactly what this is and I'm not bothered by it.  You
see, you're not doing the hypnotizing.  You're just playing
a recording.  All the psychology and work creating this has
been done.  Just hit play and make sure the sound is good.
In other words, someone else is doing the hypnotizing for
you (that someone is Kenton).  If you don't like Kenton's
voice, and you feel you understand the script and nuances,
which Kenton does explain in the accompanying PDF file,
re-record it in your voice or do it live.  The script is
provided and it's about 200 words long.  The audio file
provided is about 30 minute long, but the presentation takes
up about the first 8 minutes of it.

Once again, though, I will warn you that if you wish to do
The Guide live or record it yourself, you need to pay
attention to the principles that Kenton is using and is
explained in the PDF.  It certainly helps to have knowledge
of NLP and hypnosis, but if you just carefully read Kenton's
manuscript, that'll do.  Admittedly, I'm not an expert on
NLP or hypnosis, but based on what I do know, Kenton's
thoughts on the matter and the creation of script impressed
me.  By the way, I'll also note that, at the time of this
writing, I've only tried out the audio on myself and not
others, nor an audience.

I am sure that some experienced hypnotists and NLP
practitioners may wish to debate the issue of whether or not
this recording is useful, but I think it will depend
completely on your style and needs.  Use to relax yourself,
others, or your audience.  Use it to study the principles
that Kenton's teaches.  No matter why you get this or what
you decide to do with it, unless hypnosis or suggestion in
any form really isn't your cup of tea, for the extremely
fair price that Kenton is asking, especially compared to his
other works, The Guide definitely deserves to be checked
out.

RICHARD OSTERLIND
TWO-FACED
JMOM Price: $27
Suggested Retail Price: $30

MY BLURB:
Two-Faced is an audience-tested utility prop that should
find favor with magicians and mentalists alike. What could
be better than an ordinary-looking object that can perform a
multitude of magical changes?

Two-Faced is an innocent-looking folio-style photo frame,
similar to what a professional photography studio would give
you with your 8x10 portrait, with a heavy-duty construction
that will last for years. The beauty of this time-tested
idea is that the routines are endless and you will certainly
be personalizing the prop the moment you receive it. Those
who have had a preview marveled at how such a great idea has
been left untapped all this time.

You can use Two-Faced for serious mentalism, comedy magic or
anything in between. You will find ways to enhance present
effects as well as invent totally new ones. The included
booklet has been designed to show you as much versatility as
possible and yet leave open the door to an endless stream of
new thoughts, limited only by your imagination. Two-Faced
can switch pictures, large sheets of paper, jumbo playing
cards or anything else that will fit into it.

It’s extremely hard to come up with "new simplicity," but
Two-Faced is just such a prop. You'll love it!

MY COMMENTS:
One of Richard Osterlind's earliest products has now been
released again.  Essentially this is a large photo-frame
that uses a principle found in a well-known gimmicked
wallet.  That means that Two-Faced is a utility prop that
can be used for a limitless amount of applications.  The 16
page booklet contains 6 routines, which features a version
of Clipline, a kids routine, spirit writing, a Jumbo card
effect, and a picture transformation.  Though some of these
are clearly magic applications, it has uses for both
mentalism and magic.  The routines are there merely as
illustration.

The only criticism I can make of this product is that there
is no stunning routine included in this book.  The ideas are
fine and you can certainly use them, but they really are
ideas, not fully developed routines with detailed handlings
and presentations.  This is not something you should take
out of the package and instantly start doing.  One will have
to discover a use for it.  For me, though, I love products
like these.  They sit on my shelf until I come up with the
perfect use for it and then it's, well, perfect!

The frame itself is 9"x12" and it's designed for an 8"x10"
photo or something of similar size.  There are no difficult
moves to do, although practice will prevent one problem from
happening and Richard suggests a handling to use.  Of
course, I must say that I've never been disappointed by any
of Richard Osterlind's releases, I've recommended them all,
and this is no exception.
