A funny thing happened on the way to having a new
newsletter, an updated website, two issues of the Journal of
the Mind ready, and a special sale on the Journal of the
Mind by Thanksgiving. Apparently, my web hosting service
upgraded me and their tech support didn't get the memo. I
spent a good day's worth of time finding out just how to
do certain basic functions. Well, one good turn deserves
another, and since they were kind enough to upgrade me, I'll
be kind enought to drop their service and find another
host by the year's end.
These next few weeks will be rather busy for me (see below),
so I will do my best to update the website regularly. I
hope to send out another newsletter later this week. The
operative word, of course, is hope.
Quickly now, other than a love of mentalism, what do Jack
Kent Tillar, Greg Arce, John Riggs, Maurice Fogel, Alain Nu,
Mark Strivings, Stuart Cumberland, Paul Brook, Banachek,
Bryn Reynolds, and Craig Browning all have in common? If
you guessed that they all have more than three letters in
their first name, then you need to be taken out behind the

Seriously though, if you don't know, then you're obviously

**** HOLIDAY SCHEDULE - DELAYS MAY OCCUR
Due to Thanksgiving, my week at the Castle, and the rest of
the upcoming holiday season, shipments may be delayed a bit.
Also, I will be out for most of the Christmas and New Year's

**** IMPORTANT CHANGE FOR INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS
I've had to change the shipping charge policy for
international orders. Since the price increases earlier
this year, I've allowed international customers to make
choices. Unfortunately, this has proved disastrous. For
example, I've had several customers order using the Flat
Rate Envelope Priority Mail option, however the items would
not fit into that envelope. Several orders have been lost
or seriously delayed with the standard air mail option.
So, from now on, international customers will automatically
get the priority mail option. I can certainly accomodate
cheaper shipping methods, but you'll have to e-mail first
before you order and I can tell you what they are so we can
work out the best and most inexpensive way to mail the
stuff. If you think an order can fit into a flat rate
envelope, write to me and I'll let you know if that option

MY COMMENTS:
For those of you who are bored by reading about enhancing

skip this and move on. This isn't for you and that's just
okay.
But for the professional who is continuously studying their
art and always looking to up their game, so to speak, Dr.
Bill presents some thoughts and ideas that will have you
thinking about how to apply it to your act well before you
reach the last page. Including in this is a strong idea that
may make you revisit magic squares (if you don't already do
them), a great reason to put that card away and do the
"business" with particular wallets, and a chilling method to
get your entire audience's skin to crawl.

MY COMMENTS:
Everything the blurb says about it is accurate. This is a
handsome collector's edition of Shakespeare that no one will
suspect could ever be a cleverly gimmicked-to-the-hilt book,
but it is. I was quite impressed with the amount of details
and the versatility that the book offers. Originally, when
I first saw this advertised, I thought that this book would
be quite large and heavy and totally impractical for many
stage performances. In fact, I wrote Todd about that. When
I finally saw it, I was pleasantly surprised that my
assumptions were wrong. Though it still is heavier than
most books (nearly 4lbs, 9" x 8" x 2") or book tests, it is
still portable enough that it can easily be put into one's
briefase.
The best book tests are ones that operate without a lot of
procedure. In other words, the participant opens the book
to any page and has a free choice of words. For The
Shakespeare Experiment, the participants certainly do that,
but they are directed to certain places in the text. They
must choose the first word of either of the two columns or
the bottom word of either of the two columns. If they choose
the first word of the first column, then one does not need
to know any other information. If they choose any other
column, one has to slyly obtain some information in order to
determine which word they are looking at. In performance,
this will not be noticed by the audience and I mention it
here only for comparison to other book tests.
As pointed out in the blurb, selecting words from the
Shakespearean plays is only part of what can be done. Words
can be selected from the sonnets and the glossary at the
back of the book. Even the pictures can be selected for
revelations. Unfortunately, all the pictures are in the
back section of the book and they should have been
interspersed throughout the whole text. It's the one detail
that really bothers me about the book, but it's really minor
and doesn't make it any less functional or effective.
To perform the main effect with the plays, one does have to
remember a fair amount of words (less than 50), but The
Miracle Factory has included two very clever "performance
accessories" that eliminate the need for the memorization.
On the other hand, putting forth the time to memorize the
material will make for a stronger performance.
There are a couple of considerations to using this. First,
I think it rather obvious that this is not suitable for
walkaround purposes, but I'll point that out anyway. More
importantly, this book cannot be given to a Shakespearean
scholar. It is very possible you can fool one, but it's
quite risky. This means that this may not be suitable for
one-on-one, unless you know that the person you're
performing this for is not a student of the Bard. Again,
it's a minor point, but if you perform mostly one-on-one,
then this is definitely a consideration.
Besides the book and two performance accessories, the
package includes a CD-Rom that contains the 21 page
instructions which are on a PDF file. If you're looking for
a fine book test and you feel that a book containing the
works of Shakespeare can fit into your act, then I do
recommend this handsome, extremely well-made product.

AL MANN & DEVIN KNIGHT
IMPROVED LEXICON PHENOMENA

EFFECT:
Two participants secretly choose words from a “real
vocabulary book” containing hundreds of words. There are no
duplicate words in the book’s word list. The two
participants then look up their respective words in an
ungimmicked dictionary. The performer, who can be 15 feet
away, reveals both words. He does this without touching
either book or asking any questions. The performer REALLY
does not know what words or page the participants have
chosen until he reveals the two chosen words.
The participants DO NOT write anything. The participants say
nothing. They DO NOT underline or circle any words. Each
person need only read the definition of his or her selected
word and think.
This is not the first word on the page effect. The
spectators do not use any mathematics to arrive at their
words. They simply open the vocabulary book to any page and
freely choose two words from anywhere on the page. No forces
of any kind are used. Both the 56-page vocabulary book and
the dictionary are ungimmicked from cover to cover.
There are no stooges or instant stooges. No pre-show work of
any kind is used. The effect is a one-man effect that can be
instantly repeated using different words. The spectators can
examine both books and nothing will be amiss.

MY COMMENTS:
As one might have expected from one of mentalism's most
prolific and talented creators, Devin Knight has once again
created a mind-boggling effect that fooled everyone at
Mindvention 2008. It's a hands off, totally examinable book
test that requires no memorization or sleights and is very
impressive.
What makes this unique is that the participants say
absolutely nothing. No page numbers are asked for because
there are no page numbers in the learning vocabulary book.
No letters or any other info is pumped for. And that's very
important, so I'll repeat that. No information is asked for
. . . ever! Also, there are no duplicate pages of anything.
And there's nothing to memorize (though you could memorize
200 word pairs, I suppose).
Other than the books, of course, what's necessary, though,
are the 8.5" x 11" sheets of cardstock that you write the
two words on. They are absolutely necessary to the workings
of the effect. And that brings us to the two considerations
of this effect. First, this doesn't work well for close-up.
Since you need to use the cardstock, this effects suits
parlour and stage. Second, you must use two people. The
whole modus operandus hinges on using two, no more or less.
Finally, the types of books used may limit your
presentational needs. Since I am a high school English
teacher and use that persona in my act, this book test could
fit right into my act because it uses dictionaries and
vocabulary. Corporate performers who know that their clients
need to learn vocabulary words could also use it, as well as
others. Now, these are not necessarily drawbacks, but
definitely considerations that must be taken into account.
The books themselves look ordinary. The dictionary actually
is ordinary. I found it at the local bookshop and online at
Amazon. The special book is the vocabulary book, however
that can be examined thoroughly. It looks just like a book
one would pick up to learn vocabulary and, in fact, one
could use it as such. Needless to say, the dictionary and
vocabulary book are in English and so this book test may not
be suitable for performers in foreign countries where
English is not common.
The package comes complete with the two books, both being
about 6" x 9". The instructions are 16 pages, 8.5" x 11",
stapled. Plus you get the special something that makes this
work and extra cardstock, all 8.5" x 11". Devin really put
a lot of work and thought into this and there's no question
that this is one of the most clever book tests on the market.

MY COMMENTS:
Top Shelf is an ingenious marketing system that doesn't take
a lot of pages to describe (8 pages, 8.5" x 11" single-sided
monograph). It's totally different from the angle of
showing up at restaurants and competing with other
performers to get yourself hired to increase traffic.
Instead, you're causing the manager of the establishment to
want you to perform at the restaurant and on your own terms.
It's actually easy to do, and not at all unethical, but the
main "price," if you want to call it that, is that it does
take time. You can't just walk into an establishment, meet
the manager, and get booked in an afternoon with this
technique. That's not what this is about. What you're
doing is positioning yourself at an establishment so that
you can maximize your position and earnings. This is a
marketing idea that Bob Sheets and Bill Malone have used,
though Docc has tweaked it with his own ideas.
Several strategies that Docc employs in this Top Shelf
strategy involve some recently released routines that Docc
has marketed: The Whispering Buddha, The Invisible Stranger,
and the Rosini Secret. These are included in the package.
I've already discussed these in separate reviews and I'll
refer you to those if you want my thoughts on them. However,
when used with this system, they have a much stronger
impact.
My one complaint about this package is that, for right now,
the Top Shelf monograph is only included in this package.
Which means that if you want it, you have to purchase the
other items, regardless of whether you have them or not. If
you don't have any of them, and you wish to work in the
types of venues this addresses, then this is a bargain and a
no-brainer purchase decision. Also, if you do plan on using
the marketing strategy that Docc uses, this package still
has the potential to be worth far more than the cost of this
package. But for those who already have one or more of the
other three products, it's annoying to have to buy these
other products twice. I would have preferred to have this
package come out first and then have the other items become
available as separate items later.
