THE BLURB:
A secret from deep within the Osterlind vault!
This is the deck that Richard Osterlind carried with him
constantly for years. It is made up of a series of tried and
proven principles both new and old.
First, it is a stacked deck enabling you to do any effect in
that category-and we have included some incredible ones!
Next, it has a built in Radar Deck! That's right; you can
perform the Radar Deck effect without the need for a second
deck! Because of Richard's incredible thinking, you can
achieve the exact same effect without switching in the
gimmicked deck.
Because of the nature of this stack, you can ask a person to
name any card and perform Al Koran's Encore Card Stab with
that named card! This is only one of the many effects you
can perform using this built-in principle.
We have also included some old and newer effects based after
Kaplan's work in his book, The Fine Art of Magic. These are
completely independent of the stacked deck principle and
play incredibly strong.
All of the above is just the beginning and, at the end, you
are left with a normal deck of playing cards! And these
cards are the new Bicycle Mandolin cards which are becoming
the choice of magicians everywhere.
Another unique feature of these card enables you easily
transform the deck into an impromptu Mene-Tekel deck! This
same principle will enable you to perform 4 Ace (or any
value) routines in a startling new way.
And there is still more! Richard teaches you how to adapt
this deck to use with his famous Breakthrough Card System,
if you currently use that stack. Just those ideas are worth
the cost of the whole outfit.
There is more value in this deck than any ten other decks on
the market!
Comes complete with Bicycle Mandolin deck and 31 page
instruction booklet.
MY COMMENTS:
This is more solid thinking from the mind of Richard
Osterlind. However, if one gets this expecting the
brilliance and breakthrough thinking that Richard Osterlind
exhibited in his Breakthrough Card System or Radar Deck, you
may be disappointed. The Dynamo Deck is just not in the
class of those ideas. The blurb says that this deck is
"made up of a series of tried and proven principles both new
and old," and the stack itself, along with some routines, is
quite old.
Of course, that doesn't mean that one should dismiss this.
Far from it. So what exactly is Richard Osterlind selling,
you may ask. Since the deck is simply an ordinary deck
that's been arranged and slightly altered, I consider the
meat of what you're getting to be the booklet.
The first section of the booklet discusses the stack and
contains six routines using the stack, including The Basic
Routine, Par Optic Vision Plus, Card Calling, Encore Card
Stab with an Encore, Think of a Card, and Knowing the
Position of Any Card in the Deck.
Then there's a section about doing the Radar Deck with any
deck of cards, specifically this one. The next section
provides some additional routines with this utility deck.
They include The Mene-Tekel Deck and Four Aces. Finally,
there is a section on the use of the Corner Short and The
Breakthrough Card System.
In other words, what you're getting is a 31-page booklet of
Richard's thinking on one of the most utilitarian stacks
ever devised (yes, you probably know what it is, but since
Osterlind doesn't mention in the blurb, I won't, either).
Osterlind provides his thoughts on how to take this ordinary
deck, with an extraordinary set-up, and turn it into a
mentalist's arsenal. That you get a deck already made is,
to me, a bonus.
Which brings us to the big question. Can I recommend this?
If you're a fan of Osterlind's material, then you don't me
to recommend this. And if you haven't done the work to
learn a memorized deck and need an easy to perform
utilitarian deck, then I can certainly recommend checking
this out to see if it suits your style.
Beyond that, I certainly have to be honest and say that this
is not one of Osterlind's signature products, nor can I say
that this is a must-have. But I've always enjoyed and
recommended Osterlind's thinking and there's some good and
fresh ideas in here that definitely make this worth it, if
you decide to get this.
