THE BLURB:
A soon-to-be spectator gives you a number from 1-100. You remove all the change from your pocket and the total matches exactly! In Greg's professional repertoire for years, it's a perfectly direct and deceptive feat of mentalism that has impressed some of the best minds in magic! It's easy to do. You start clean, end clean, can turn your pocket inside out or (if you're cheeky enough) have a spectator reach in for the income outcome herself. Plus,it comes with 36 remarkable routines to overwhelm your senses! Resets instantly. No palming. No forcing. No tailoring. No place it can't be done. The instructional DVD, fine leather money clip and custom-designed "secret weapon" will make you look like a master mentalist in minutes! "As real as it gets!" - Banachek "A beautiful perfect thing" - Paul Harris "That's #@&^ing amazing!!!" - Bob Cassidy "This fooled me entirely! I'm an instant fan and want to do it ASAP! - Joshua Jay "You fried me. I want to put this in my repertoire immediately!" - John Kennedy "I love being fooled! How do I put this in my next TV special?" - Cyril MY COMMENTS: Exact Change is one of the most direct and powerful mentalism gimmicks that I've ever seen. Read the blurb above. The performer asks for a number from 1 to 100. The participant names a number, say 42. The performer announces that it's exactly what he wanted the participant to say. To prove it, the performer reaches into his pocket, pulls out some change, and shows the rest of the pocket to be completely empty. The coins are counted. They add up to forty-two cents. (This is my slight variation of the basic routine which focuses on coincidence. I prefer to use the theme of influence.) This basic plot isn't magic. Nothing vanishes. Nothing appears. Nothing transforms. There's nothing visually happening. A two-digit (or single-digit number) is named and that number corresponds to the amount of change in the performer's pocket. Bam! Just like that! This is just solid, hard-hitting, powerful mentalism. Now, you could use this to do a magic effect, because this gimmick is versatile. One could also use it to go beyond the pocket idea (though the pocket is always used). For example, one of the thirty-six effects from the DVD involves an iPhone app which correctly displays a named amount and then that amount of coins appears to drop out out of the iPhone like a slot machine. This, of course, is a magic effect. For mentalism, one could have an envelope in one's shirt pocket and dump out the correct change. This is just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. What you're buying essentially is a specially-made gimmick that allows you to quickly access a specific amount of change. It is very well made and well thought-out. I especially like that it has a button on it so that when it's in your pocket you can make sure it's oriented correctly. Though it's specifically designed for U.S. coins, it can be used for UK and Euro coins. This is explained on the DVD. And, not only is it versatile in the types of effects you could do, it's also versatile in the handling of the gimmick. Gregory Wilson explains many ways to handle the gimmick (specifically we're referring to ditches and dodges). Max Maven and John Kennedy are two of the many who've contributed suggestions for the handlings. These handlings include ones that involve no sleights, simple sleights, money clips, a second gimmick attached to the pocket, and more. There is no doubt that you will find one handling that works for you. Personally, I keep my wallet and keys in my right front pocket. When I want to do the effect, I move those two items to another pocket and slide in the gimmick. I was playing with it with this past weekend with my son. I did it quite a number of times and he never caught on to what I was doing. The considerations are very slight. First, it's not difficult to do but it does require some practice. When someone names a number, one must be able to quickly and quietly do the work. For me, I was able to adequately do this after a half hour or so. Though it could be used for parlour or stage work, it is a perfect effect for walkaround, though after performing it, one does have to reset the gimmick. It takes seconds to do, though, and can be done by stepping away for a sec or on the way to the next group. Finally, as implied above, one does have to have one pocket free. I felt it was worth it and, as mentioned above, I can free up a pocket quickly when ready to do the effect. Exact Change has first-class packaging. It comes in an elegant box that has a slipcover. Inside there is an instructional DVD, which contains Gregory Wilson's very detailed instructions, plus the 36 different routines. Obviously, one also gets the gimmick. In addition, there is a leather money clip holder for use with Gregory Wilson's favorite handling of the gimmick and another gimmick for a handling that involves the pocket. Now, I must qualify my comments at this point by saying that I'm a fan of Gregory Wilson. I thoroughly enjoy his magic stuff, which is extremely inventive, and he's come up with a few items that mentalists can really use. Specifically, Freakey is outstanding and I carry it with me and use it all the time. That said, I've little doubt that if this was the only product, mentalism or otherwise, that I'd seen from Gregory Wilson, I would still be as excited about it. I've no doubt that this will end up in my year-end Top 10 list of mentalist products. Like Banachek and Cassidy, I highly recommend it, too, natch! (Note: Cosmo Solano's INTERNATIONAL POCKET CHANGE was released earlier this year. Solano and Wilson did discuss this with each other and realized that this was clearly a case of independent invention. I've seen both and can state that Wilson's version is far superior to the other. The main advantage is that Wilson's allows one to name any number from 1-100, where Solano's allows only for a number between 50-100.)
