THE BLURB:
The hands off, no touches, no thread work, fully examinable "Haunted Deck" you will really use! ANYTIME in your performance with a NORMAL UNPREPARED DECK...a friend shuffles then cuts to a genuine random card (signed if you want). You place the card back into the deck...which goes onto the table or floor. She can even cut the deck again and complete the cut...so that she's the LAST PERSON to touch the deck before the haunting starts. The deck is sitting face down in the middle of the table. There is no secret stuff connected between you and the deck or the table. You can even put a clear bowl over the deck to completely seal it off from outside influences. And yet...while you're completely away from the deck...after about 7 seconds...the upper half of the deck ever so slowly begins to MOVE...SLOWLY, HAUNTINGLY, sliding itself...cutting into two halves! The spectator slides out the card just cut to. It's the one! And if she has the urge...she can once again examine the normal deck. Then whenever you feel the spirit...you can do it again. "HAUNTED" is ALWAYS ready to perform! NO LOOPS OR THREAD WORK NORMAL DECK CAN BE EXAMINED BEFORE AND AFTER PERFORM SURROUNDED IN ALL CONDITIONS ALL NATURAL ACTIONS. NO SECRET MOVES INSTANT RESET. ALWAYS READY TO PERFORM VERY, VERY EASY TO DO COMPLETE WITH TWO GIMMICKS AND DVD (use your own deck). NOTE: INCLUDES MARK TRAVERSONI'S BONUS HAUNTED HANDLING .PDF DOWNLOAD (See Important Note Below) MY COMMENTS: So you may have seen the ads and hype, but does it live up to that? Paul Harris, one of the legendary magic creators of the 70s and 80s, now produces others' material. I have yet to see him produce something that wasn't worth it, because he handpicks the stuff to put his name on. Peter Eggink's output, though creative, has a track record of being spotty. Some of his stuff is intriguing, but not that practical, and some of it is pretty good. If Harris thinks it's special, then I certainly will take his word for it sight unseen. Okay. Enough background. Let's get to the point. Is this as good as the ad suggests and/or is the ad misleading? Yes, it is as good as the ad and hype suggest. You can lay the cards on a participant's hand, if you want, without anything connected to you and the "haunting" will happen. You can even take a few steps to the other side of the room, should you wish. The gimmick is self-contained, it resets instantly, and is angle-proof. And the gimmick can be easily and naturally switched in and out so that the deck can be examined and used for other effects. Now, the ad may be misleading because it states that there's no thread work involved. That's true, but that depends on your definition of "thread." Let's just say that there's absolutely no hook-ups to any part of the body, nor does anything need to be concealed on the body at any time, and it's all self-contained within the deck. Also, it's much easier to use than any other version using thread and it's certainly cheaper than the version by Christopher Taylor (Taylor Imagineering), which is not necessarily my way of saying that this is better. There is one other principle at play that causes the deck to be delayed in its movement. The package includes what you need in order to make this principle work, but it is a consumable item that, from what I understand, is sold only in Europe, not in the U.S. There are similar items in the U.S. and one may indeed work, but the specific something in the package is unavailable to U.S. purchasers, at least at the time of this writing. Even though this is easy to do, it does require a bit of practice to get the "haunting" to work correctly. This is due to the pressure your hands will have on the deck (and everyone has different degrees of pressure), the way you prepared the gimmick, and the way you loaded the selected card. In other words, you can't do this right out of the box. You'll need to make this up and experiment with it, but once that's done, it's done. There is a preparation involved to the gimmick once you get it. It is very easy-to-do and takes no more than five minutes. It is no more difficult than gluing pieces of paper together or adhering stickers onto surfaces. This preparation, according to the DVD, must be done every forty performances or so. Also included in the package is material that will allow you to repair the gimmick, if necessary, and also to construct a new gimmick with a different card. This can include business cards, postcards, etc. There is more preparation work involved, of course, because you'll have to make the gimmick, but it is definitely possible. Finally, I'll mention that, for mentalists, this effect does fall into the PK or mental magic category. I state this for those who wonder why I'm even cataloging this. Whether or not this is mentalism and whether not you can use this in your repertoire depends on your style and needs. Whew! I know, that was a lot of information to fill in for you so that you can make an informed decision and I hope it wasn't further confusing. If you're a fan of the haunted deck, this is certainly something you want to check out. The package includes two gimmicks, some material for repair or two make up different types of gimmicks, the instructional DVD, and everything you need to make this work. SPECIAL NOTE: There are some great additional handling tips from Mark Traversoni that were not included in the DVD. After you purchase this from me, send me a note letting me know that you received HAUNTED and I'll send it to you as a bonus.
