MY COMMENTS:
Luca Volpe has released a new DVD containing five solid
routines. Luca's becoming a major new talent in the world
of mentalism and this DVD is a great sampling of his type of
thinking. The blurb, unfortunately, is a bit more vague on
the routines than I think is necessary. So let me discuss
the routines just a bit more.
THE VISION:
This is kind of like ashes on the arm in which a chosen
playing card appears in the center of a drawing which the
performer makes on his hand.
THE CONNECTION:
A drawing duplication between two people using ordinary
clipboards and paper. No gimmicks. Very clean.
THE EXPERIENCE:
A participant thinks of an experience and the performer
draws and also identifies the special person in the
experiences that the participant is thinking of.
HALLUCINATION ACAAN:
A card named appears at the chosen number. Then, as if it
was all a hallucination, the cards are shown to be all
blank, including the chosen card.
THE CALL:
This is a playing card trick done over the phone.
Unfortunately, it is rather difficult to explain in a few
brief words.
That should give you a slightly better idea of the routines.
My first note is that these routines are close-up and
one-on-one routines. Also, three of the five routines
involve playing cards. There's absolutely nothing wrong with
that and this is not a criticism, just information.
As to the routines, I do like the "The Connection" a lot and
wish it could be done on stage, but it is a one-on-one for
reasons of the methodology. The principle is quite old, but
there is some nice handling touches to it. "Hallucination
ACAAN" is a very strong piece of card mentalism, and it does
border on mental magic. There are a few moves and memory
work involved with it. My favorite piece is "The
Experience." It's a strong variation of the universal
picture concept. But these are what I like and you may have
different favorites, of course.
I enjoyed this DVD which is slightly less than 60 minutes
long. There's enough of a variety here that you'll find one
or two routines that you'll probably like or get ideas from.
