THE BLURB:
Mentalism Reveals A duality of exploration and discovery. The first part of the book discusses what mentalism reveals about you - both as a performer and as a person. That your choices about style and premise reveal as much about you as your choice of material. And why that informs and impacts on every aspect of your performance, whether you are a working professional or a casual hobbyist. What is the goal of mentalism in the 21st Century? What is your goal in performing? And why does it matter? Through the use of stimulating questions and some unexpected and controversial answers, Mentalism Reveals examines and evaluates the approaches that work. This ensures that this is not just an abstract, theoretical analysis of the issues that lie at the heart of the mystery arts, but offers solid real-world frameworks upon which to build your performances. The second part examines mentalism 'reveals' or revelations themselves. This is an aspect of the art that is crucial to any good performance but sadly neglected by many performers: how to reveal information in the most impressive and entertaining way possible. After the force, glimpse or peek, what are the best ways to reveal a selected thought, word, number or playing card? Methods and techniques are taught which will amplify the way you reveal any kind of information and turn the climax of every effect you do into a genuinely memorable experience. We've all seen too many sub-standard performers using the "I'm getting the letter L" or the "I'm seeing the colour black" type of revelation which are a complete anti-climax, and leave the audience simply wondering how the performer found out the information (and often, why they bothered!) The principles and fully-scripted revelations taught in this book ensure that you will never give one of these weak 'why bother' performances. Whilst you will want to take your time to study this material, you will learn how your script, language and timing can immediately be improved to strengthen your performance. Powerful methodologies are taught that can be used just as they are, but which are also de-constructed in order to teach you how to incorporate the essential components into the effects that you already perform. If you want to be a stronger and more memorable performer, Mentalism Reveals gives you both the knowledge and the skills you need. You'll never look at performing the same way again... The book also contains a rather splendid surprise which is not mentioned above (nor will I disclose to anyone) and which I will let purchasers discover for themselves. It is a limited edition of 100 copies. MY COMMENTS: NOTE: ONLY A FEW COPIES LEFT!! It's quite rare to find a book which has so much valuable information on how to be a successful performer, specifically a successful mentalist. Granted, a lot of what Elsdon says has been stated, or echoed, in classic works by Barrie Richardson, Ken Weber, Chuck Hickok, Richard Osterlind, Lee Earle, and a few others. However, he has brought all of this together in one 118 page hardcover volume. The "splendid surprise," incidentally, is some invaluable contributions from guest authors, but I don't want to totally spoil the surprise by saying who or what they write about. Here is the Table of Contents: Part 1 - Mentalism Genesis Chapter 1 - A Clarion Call To Originality Chapter 2 - So, You Wanna Be A Mentalist? Chapter 3 - Who Do You Think You Are? Chapter 4 - What Is Wrong With You Chapter 5 - Playing Your Trumpet Chapter 6 - Imagining Superpowers Chapter 7 - Being Memorable And Unforgettable Chapter 8 - Why Most Mentalism Is (Insert Your Own Derogatory Word Here...) Chapter 9 - Comedy Is No Laughing Matter Part 2 - Mentalism Revelations Chapter 10 - A Manifesto: Motivational Mentalism Chapter 11 - There Is Just One Rule: No Rules Chapter 12 - Moving The Moment Chapter 13 - Making Connections Chapter 14 - ONVI Chapter 15 - The Revelations As you may be able to deduce, the book includes discussions about mentalism definitions, originality, persona, abilities, comedy, act structure, audience connections, and more. All of these are ideas that mentalists should consider and know how to use effectively. I know some may be questioning the price tag. And it is a good chunk of one's budget, so to speak. For the beginning mentalist, this is like a crash course in what you need to be. It will save you time searching through the texts from the gentlemen named above (as well as others). It is, without doubt, an investment and a solid step in becoming a successful, working mentalist. For the experienced mentalist, consider this a refresher course. I have to be honest and say that there are quite a few pros who have not elevated the level of their performances to what it should be. Perhaps they skip over the theory and performance craft sections of manuscripts because they feel they don't need it. Perhaps they feel they don't need that advice. Perhaps they forgot. Perhaps they need someone to point out the crucial stuff that really works. Whatever the reason, if you feel that you are not getting the incredible reactions that you want and should be getting as a mentalist, then this book is a must-have. Here's the bad news on this: At the time of this writing, there's less than a dozen copies left of this limited edition text. Because the Blackpool 2011 convention is coming up, you may not have much time to order the last of this limited edition before it sells out. So, if you want it, don't wait a second.
