Burton Sperber
THE BLURB:
In 1982 Burton Sperber published Miracles of My Friends in a limited numbered edition. Hailed as a classic anthology of mentalism, it has long been out of print. Sadly, many of Sperber's friends from that volume are no longer with us. Fortunately, he keeps making new friends, and Miracles of My Friends II is finally available! Edited by Leo Behnke, Foreword by Peter Reveen, Preface by Burton Sperber, contributions by Larry Becker (It's about Time), Leo Behnke (Add-a-Memory), David Ben (Psychic DNA), Robin DeWitt (The Mentalist's Thumb Tip), Paul Draper (Escape from Sin), Ed Fowler (3 contributions), Richard Ganstwig (The Most Interesting Man), Paul Green (You Can Do It, I know!), Scott Grossberg (3 contributions), Todd Karr (Web Scam), Nick Lewin (Fogel's Invisible Piano), Max Maven (Sing a Song of Sixth Sense), Jheff Poncher (ESP Do as I Do), Burton Sperber (9 contributions), Jack Tillar (Location, Location, Location), Chris Woodward (2 Fogel related contributions), and Rob Zabrecky (A Skeptical Prediction). A reprint of the late Bascom Jones, Jr's 19 Rules of Mentalism plus the five key building blocks that all mental performers should master is also included. Limited to just 1,000 copies, this is likely to go out of print quickly and attain the sought-after status of the first volume. Don't be disappointed! Order now! 124 pages, clothbound with actual Magic Castle playing cards on the front cover. MY COMMENTS: As stated in the blurb above, the first volume of this has sold out and commands some pretty high prices when you can find it. Beyond that, it's difficult for me to fairly comment on this book because I'm one of Burt Sperber's friends and contributed a piece to this volume. (By the way, my contribution is a brand new routine that's not found anywhere else.) As you might expect, there is a variety of material in here. Some of these contributions have been included elsewhere (the Tillar and Fogel material, for example) and at least one has been marketed as a separate product that sold for about half the cost of this book (Larry Becker's It's About Time). This is by no means a criticism, but just to let you know that some of the material may be familiar to you. And Bascom Jones "19 Rules of Mentalism" are essential. Period. I will point out one thing. This book was a bit rushed and the editing/proofreading was, let's just say, not as good as it should have been. There are numerous typographical errors and a couple of the effects, including Larry Becker's and Jack Kent Tillar's, are unfortunately missing some key paragraphs. The Larry Becker errata is included on a separate page to keep with the book. Despite that, there's great material within these pages (especially Sperber's stuff) and don't forget that this 124 page hard-bound book is a limited edition.
