THE BLURB:

A Unique Stand Up Version Of Out Of This World.

Vernet is proud to introduce an incredible and unique Stand
Up/Stage version of Out of This World.

Imagine this: The magician improvises two music stands with
two glasses and two pieces of cardboard, one red the other
one black. He gives the deck to the spectators asking them
to shuffle it. After that, he begins to show cards showing
their backs and asks the spectators if they think that those
cards are red or black. As they answer, the magician leaves
the cards against the corresponding cardboard pieces. Once
all the cards have been dealt, the magician takes the cards
leaning against the red cardboard piece and shows that all
of them are: red! Then, he takes the rest of the cards
against the black cardboard piece and shows that they are
Black!

MY COMMENTS:
This is a stand-up version of what is arguably the greatest
card effect in magic. Certainly it is considered one of the
greatest mentalism card effects. In fact, there is a video
story on the DVD about this effect and the legendary story
of one magician who kept Winston Churchill amazed for hours
with this effect.

This particular version claims to present a stand-up version
of this classic close-up effect. The solution is quite
solid in its thinking and I like it, though I haven't tried
it yet. To clarify some of the blurb, and without giving
away the secret totally, ordinary cards are indeed used, but
one cannot use a borrowed deck. There is some preparation
involved. The audience can mix the cards at the beginning,
but it does involve some audience management and confidence
in the boldness of what's being done.

I will note that doing this effect for large audiences may
be a bit controversial. First, it may be problematic
because it's more difficult for the audience to read the
cards from a distance. I know they are just looking at
colors, which is a bit better than trying to read the value
and identify the suit, but cards still don't make the best
prop for larger audiences.

Secondly, many may feel that it may be useful to use
something else instead of playing cards. Recent effects such
as Whitestar, which is really a version of Out of the World
only with photos of Titanic survivors and victims, have
demonstrated that one can use other props to do this. And
these props may be much more visible on stage.

Of course, these notes are purely ones that apply to one's
one personal style. I made those points only for your
consideration in purchasing the product. The bottom line is
that the routine is well-structured and thought out. One
certainly gets what is expected. As described above, one
needs to supply the cards and also find two pieces of
colored cardboard, one red and one black. Some rubber bands
are also needed, but these are easily obtainable. One also
needs a couple of glasses on a table to use as support to
display the cardboard pieces.

I've always liked the response audiences have given to Out
of This World. It is a classic for a reason and this is a
novel way to perform this, if you don't mind the extra props
involved. I'm actually intrigued enough to want to try this
out myself. This DVD which includes the instructions,
performances of the routines, and the aforementioned video
story, is highly recommended for anyone who's a fan of Out
of This World, or mentalism with playing cards.
