"The essays in this book are worth the price of the entire
book, and more!! The rest of this book is a treasure trove
of fascinating mental effects that your young - and not so
young - audiences will enjoy. These wonderful effects are so
good that I'm tempted to dust off my old Riccardo outfit and
start performing again. I know you'll enjoy this book, and
will come back to it again and again in the future. If you
have any doubts whatsoever about performing mentalism for
children, try one or two of the effects in this book. I know
you'll change your mind. Thank you, Paul, for compiling and
publishing this valuable book."
- Richard Webster

"When magicians and mentalists think of 'kids' they think of
kids 3-4 years old. This is rarely the case, even for
regular kids entertainers. People do not give kids enough
credit for being smart. They get mentalism and mindreading,
even at the age of five and six. It can be done, and I have
done it. They certainly understand when Harry Potter gets a
psychic image."

MY COMMENTS:
This is yet another one of those great controversies. You
see, for many, the words "kids" and "mentalism" should never
be put together. That is, unless you're one of the many
successful entertainers who are performing mentalism for
"young minds" and have the experience to disagree. What
this book clearly points out is that one can perform
mentalism for "young minds" so long as it is entertaining.

Admittedly, I have my own feelings towards this subject, but
I do agree with most of what is being said in this book.
Also, though most mentalists don't do full shows for kids,
mentalists will inevitably find themselves in situations
where kids are present. And, one of the big rules I learned
when performing magic is that you always play to the kids.
So, it's good to have a routine, or three, handy in one's
repertoire just in case the little ones are around.

This huge 250+ page tome is just packed with entertaining
routines designed for young minds. Most of these are
classics that have been given new presentations so that
younger minds can more easily relate to them. There's
nothing wrong with that, and that's pretty much the point of
this book, but I just wouldn't want you to buy this thinking
you'll be getting groundbreaking material. There is some
terrifically creative stuff in here. As you can see by the
table of contents in the blurb, there are dozens of routines
included.

Besides Paul Romhany's introductory essays on the subject,
there are two terrific essays by David Kaye (aka Silly
Billy), a renowned children's entertainer, and Mark
Strivings. The two different viewpoints are quite
refreshing, though it's amazing how much they have in
common.

If I had one complaint about the book, it would have to be
the odd size of it. It's 8.5" square, rather than the
traditional sizes. But that's really a minor quibble and
has nothing to do with the material inside, which is what
you're buying anyway. This is certainly one book in my
library that I'll be readig and re-reading. Definitely
recommended.
