MY COMMENTS:
Banachek's Psychokinetic Time is a classic and, being
terribly underpriced, one of the terrific values in
mentalism. For awhile, after Blaine used it on one of his
specials, it was pretty popular. But that was so yesterday
and is no longer the "latest thing." That's awesome news
for the working mentalist (and magician) who knows that the
older material is just as strong as it ever was.
Which brings us to Alain Nu. It's difficult to create a
classic, but it takes a brilliant innovator to take a
classic and re-invent it so that it's even better. There's
absolutely nothing wrong with the original PK Time, but
Alain Nu has injected it with steroids and made it a
show-stopping miracle. It's main advantage over the
original is that involves everyone in the audience rather
than just the one participant who's watch moves. Nu's
routine has three phases, each one logical and organic to
the flow of the routine.
I'll also note that Kenton Knepper also created a routine
that's strikingly similar and used the same basic concepts.
It's in his PRINCIPLES AND POWERS II audio series. Also,
Yaniv Deautsch explored turning back time for an entire
audience in his new book, TELEPATHY REPORT.
I don't think I'm going to be giving much away by saying
that because watches are involved, the performer needs to
have a watch. Nu explains the best type of watch to use for
this routine. They are not gimmicked at all, but certain
watches are easier to handle than others.
Also, I must confess that I don't wear a watch (blame it on
my carpal tunnel syndrome) and since the advent of smart
phones I've stopped wearing a pocket watch, too. Also, time
travel as a theme just doesn't suit my onstage persona.
That only frustrates me because this routine is so strong
and just doesn't suit my style. This is definitely not a
negative criticism (I really, really like this!), but it's
the reason I cannot give you any firsthand experience in
using this.
Psycho-Chronetic is a limited edition, 40-page, 8.5" x 11"
booklet is well-thought out and very powerful. I can
certainly see this routine as the standout in any
mentalist's set. It involves a couple of watches and
everyone in the audience. It packs flat and plays very big.
The book also contains bonus routines and ideas from Bob
Cassidy, Mark Elsdon, Patrick Redford, and Neal Scryer.
Plus, with every order, Nu includes (with Banachek's
