Shin Lim
THE BLURB:
From the mind of Shin Lim comes an extremely clean and deceptive piece of mentalism. Effect: You present both a deck of cards and a prediction, both which YOU WILL NEVER TOUCH in the performance. As a matter of fact, you can be sitting in the audience while the spectator is on stage counting the cards. You ask the spectator to think of a number between 1-52. Once a number has been chosen, you instruct the spectator to pick up the deck, and deal down to that number. You then instruct her to lift up the prediction which has been on the table the entire time. THE CARD AND PREDICTION MATCH.... EVERY TIME! POINTS: The magician DOES NOT touch the deck at any time. The magician DOES NOT touch the prediction at any time. NO gimmicks. NO rough and Smooth. NO sticky cards (this includes, glues, wax, roughing, ANYTHING) NO equivoque NO stooges NO switching NO electronics NO gimmicks Instant Reset Shot in 1080p full HD, Shin goes over 3 variations of this effect. Second, and I'm sure it's a case of independent invention, this is essentially Mike Rose's THE GRAIL in terms of the basic methodology and plot. There are differences between the two. The mnemonics and deck set-up is different. With THINK, there are ten different rules to remember. THE GRAIL only has eight, but there are some minor calculations to do. I don't think one is any easier or more difficult than the other, but one's style and needs may dictate which one is better. The biggest difference is that the participant can handle the cards the entire time. With THE GRAIL, the cards need to be held by the performer in case a "move" needs to be made, which is a good percentage of the time. With THINK, the participant can handle the deck the whole time and the performer doesn't need to ever touch the cards. In fact, if the "move" needs to be made, the participant does it and doesn't realize it at all. It's a very natural action that the performer asks the participant to do, yet sneakily sets up the deck. Here are some general points, which also apply to THE GRAIL. One deck is used in peformance, though you'll need a couple of regular matching decks to construct this (or some extra cards from other matching decks). The deck can be used for other effects. It can be handled by a participant, but not closely examined. This effect should not be instantly repeated, unless you have a second THINK deck. Also, for those who are ACAAN fans, and like THE GRAIL, this is not an ANY card at ANY number. The participant doesn't have a free choice of a card, since that is predicted, but does have a free choice of the number. The DVD cover actually, and accurately, calls this "a card at ANY number" effect. The package includes the instructional DVD and some extra cards. As indicated above, you'll need to supply your own decks of cards. Finally, you may ask which I think is better. The big advantage to THE GRAIL is that one can easily make it into a regular examinable deck of cards. That can be done with THINK, but not as easily. THINK can be totally hands off and that's a big advantage in my book.
